SPOILERS for Black Adam to follow.

Superman has returned, and he still looks like Henry Cavill. Now that it has officially been confirmed that Cavill is back as the Man of Steel, the actor has revealed further details of what he hopes to see from the character. While speaking with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Cavill reveals how much the role means to him and promises “an enormously joyful Superman.”

“The character means so much to me. It’s been five years now. I never gave up hope, and it’s amazing to be here now talking about it again. There is such a bright future ahead for the character. I’m so excited to tell a story with an enormously joyful Superman.”

Henry Cavill made his debut as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel, but while his casting was well-received, criticism was leveled at the depiction of a more morose, brooding version of the beloved comic book character. Things did not get better with Cavill’s next appearance in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and while the Man of Steel does seem a lot more cheerful at the end of both the Joss Whedon Justice League and Zack Snyder's Justice League, he has never quite reached the endearing optimism of his comic book counterpart.

Well, it sounds like that is going to change when Henry Cavill returns for his next Superman adventure. While details of that adventure remain under wraps at present, sources have claimed that Cavill has only signed “a one-off deal” to appear during the post credits scene at the end of Black Adam. However, they do add that “the studio is definitely interested in more from the star (including a solo outing).” This heavily suggests that audiences will soon be sitting down for the long-awaited Man of Steel 2.

While it was thought that Henry Cavill’s time as Superman was over, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson could not help but answer the call of DC fans. “We fought for years to bring you back. They always said no,” Johnson said regarding the studio's response to the idea of bringing Cavill back. “We can’t build out our DCEU w/out the world’s greatest superhero. And fans will always come first. Welcome home” Finally, Johnson further teases an eventual battle between Superman and Black Adam on the big screen saying, “I’ll see you down the road.”

Henry Cavill has since taken to social media to confirm his return, with Superman appearing briefly at the end of Black Adam. "Hey everyone, I wanted to wait until the weekend was over before posting this because I wanted to give you all a chance to watch Black Adam," Cavill said. " But now that plenty of you have, I wanted to make it official that I am back as Superman. And the image you see on this post and what you saw in Black Adam are just a very small taste of things to come."

Black Adam finally hit theaters earlier this month. Black Adam introduces Dwayne Johnson as the title character who, after nearly 5,000 years of being imprisoned, Black Adam is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world. Black Adam is out now in theaters.
