Nicolas Cage is going to voice an alcoholic dragon who has a love of Flashdance in Amazon's upcoming Highfire series. The series is based on Artemis Fowl author Eoin Colfer's book of the same name. The novel also goes by the name The Last Dragon on Earth. Cage is playing Lord Highfire in the series, which has been described as "True Detective by way of Pete's Dragon." In addition, the Highfire series is said to be a "gritty crime-thriller with doses of magical realism."

Back in the day, dragons used to rule the Earth and Lord Highfire ruled the dragons from his eyrie. However, a lot has changed a lot since then. Now all Lord Highfire rules is his shack in Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp. Highfire is now known as 'Vern' and, by day, he hides out among the alligators, watches cable-TV and drinks obscene amounts of vodka to pass the time. Flashdance is one of his favorite movies. It isn't much of a life but he's alive to live it, and Vern is prepared do whatever it takes, even if its violent, to preserve his own hide. When Vern's world collides with a human teen named Squib, who becomes mixed up in some trouble while running booze for the local mob, their mutual struggle for survival becomes entangled in the most unlikely of friendships.

Highfire is being adapted for Amazon Prime by Davey Holmes, the creator and executive producer of Epix's Get Shorty TV series, which is based on the movie of the same name. Eoin Colfer's book, which came out earlier this year, has been getting rave reviews for being a "joyous fantasy for grownups." Plus, it takes the myth of dragons and gives it original spin from what we're used to reading in fiction books. Instead of being a dinosaur-sized dragon, Vern is roughly the size of a large bear, who can handle his liquor.

Highfire is outside of the box and generally seems like the perfect role for Nicolas Cage who has been known to stretch the imagination with his roles. With that being said, an alcoholic dragon that loves Flashdance is going to be considered to be pretty odd by a lot of people. If that's the case, now would probably be a great time to read through Eoin Colfer's source material to see what all of the fuss is about.

In addition to Highfire, Nicolas Cage also has the upcoming Joe Exotic TV show on the way, where he will be playing the flamboyant Tiger King star. Plus, there's The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which will find the actor portraying an exaggerated version of himself while even reenacting some of his most iconic roles. Cage is an actor who enjoys stepping outside of the box and Highfire seems like another perfect role for him to tackle. The Highfire news was first reported by Deadline.
