When we received an invitation (in the form a Hawaiian Shirt) to attend the Rising Stars Gala at the Beverly Hilton, we thought they were kidding. Who wears "Beach Chic" attire in mid-winter in California? How about such notables as Kelsey and Camille Grammer, Attorney Rikki Klieman Bratton (Chief Bratton's spouse), and John Lasseter, chief creative officer of Pixar, who received the Disney Man of the Year Award. The event benefited Big Brothers and Sisters of Los Angeles, and recognized outstanding members of the entertainment community, who are inspiring role models for young people. Andrea Bowen of Desperate Housewives received her award from writer/producer Marc Cherry, and Sherry Lansing presented Rikki Kleiman, who is a TV anchor, legal analyst, trial attorney, actor and best selling author, her award for mentoring young people.

Brad Garrett, whose Fox TV series Til Death has just been picked up, acted as master of ceremonies and introduced Oscar, Emmy and Grammy Award singer/songwriter, Randy Newman. Garrett, a former stand-up comedian himself, had something to say about Michael Richards recent racial rant at the Comedy club. "Comics always get heckled on stage, it comes with the territory". His advice to Richards is: "Stay off the Stage!" Hated to say "Aloha" to such an entertaining evening.

Ariel Agasang, one of the Philippines top designers presented a fabulous fashion show at the home of Edwin and Dr. Leilani Raquel in Hancock Park. Gorgeous Dr. Raquel, hosted the event as a fundraiser for the Pangada Cabaroan Elementary School in Santa Catalina, in honor of her Mom, Maria, who served as a principal at the school for more than 45 years.

Arielle's collection included elegant and ornate gowns, as well as body hugging casual apparel for both men and women. Top super models from around the world strutted to upbeat music, including many Philippine beauty queens.

Stephanie Reese who portrayed Kim in the German production of Miss Saigon, presented a one-woman show, The Journey, about her own path from childhood to become the roast of the European musical stage. Her crystal clear voice was a treat to the more than 300 guests who enjoyed a buffet supper around the luxurious cabanas and pool area. The Beverly Hills Hotel has nothing on this majestic estate.

Speaking of handsome homes, when it comes to decorating for the holidays, nobody does it better than Gail and Roger Dauer. Their Beverly Hills mansion is transformed into a winter wonderland every year, and her exotic Christmas Trees are something to behold. Merv Griffin used to present Christmas Tree Lane at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where trees were decorated by celebs, and auctioned off for charity. Alas, this practice no longer exists. But Gail has continued to present her holiday trees which she loves to share with the Westside Community. At a recent luncheon, benefiting Coach for Kids at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, hosted by the Crown Jewels, (Gail is their esteemed President), over 400 toys were donated to make the holidays happier for impoverished children. What a great way to start the holiday season on the Hollywood Beat.
