The opening night ceremony and awards presentation of the 6th Annual Russian Cultural Festival in West Hollywood was held at the Hyatt West on Sunset Boulevard. The special guest for the evening was famed singer/songwriter Willy Tokarev, known as the Russian Tony Bennett, who was flown in from Moscow to perform at two separate events in West Hollywood, then jet off to to San Francisco for a concert. The plucky performer has sold millions of records internationally, and is currently working on his 50th album, "Children of the World" here in the U.S. He is also being cast in a new American movie with Maria Conchita Alonso.

Representatives from the West Hollywood City Council were on hand, including handsome Mayor John J. Duran, who even addressed the audience in Russian! Did you know that there are over 300,000 Russian immigrants in Los Angeles County? Other dignitaries sipping vodka and sampling Russian delicacies, included actor Elya Baskin, who has appeared in numerous films including Spiderman 2 & 3, and attractive chanteuse Svetiana Portnyansky, whose spirited rendition of Moscow Nights had everyone dancing the czardas.

Speaking of Russian favorites, we were pleased to attend the 21st Annual "A Night Under the Stars" to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. This black tie event was hosted by Olympic Gymnasts Bart Conner and Nadia Comaneci, who won two gold medals at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The black tie evening was chaired by Timmi Masters, and awards were presented to Poppy Paulos, Al Stefl, David Cobb and Jeffrey Cassineri (posthumously) for their boundless courage and dedication to defeat this dread disease.
