For many people, their siblings are the ones who know them best in the world. They often know your most embarrassing moments, your greatest hopes and dreams, and your deepest fears. As life draws us each in our own directions, we may eventually find that our brothers and sisters are the only ones who really know how to help us when we need it most. Now, if you're a character in a horror movie, things can get ten times harder if you're facing unspeakable evils on your own. While you're in the middle of facing masked murderers and hulking evil creatures, you may want nothing more than to call on your closest companion for advice and guidance. Many stories within the horror genre make use of this type of tight-knit relationship, bringing a sense of combined bravery to adversity. These are the best horror movies that feature siblings who band together, ranked.

7 The Visit (2015)

Olivia DeJonge, Ed Oxenbould, and Kathryn Hahn in The Visit.
Universal Pictures

Ready for what's supposed to be a relaxing time spent with their grandparents, a young brother and sister team instead bear witness to the horrors unfolding close to home. After their mother leaves for a cruise, The Visit follows Becca and Tyler's first encounter with their unknown Nana and Pop Pop in found-footage style. As an M. Night Shyamalan project, The Visit was very much a comeback film for him, though it does include some demonization of mental illness. Becca and Tyler's determination to escape shows as they put on brave faces by filming the terrifying truths they uncover.

6 The Lost Boys (1987)

A scene from The Lost Boys
Warner Bros.

The Lost Boys is an '80s epic that centers sibling relationships in the midst of spooky happenings. New to Santa Clara, California, brothers Sam and Michael don't waste any time making a new group of friends. They come into contact with other brothers, Edgar and Alan Frog, who dub themselves vampire hunters. After Michael sips on a bottle of blood, he begins to undergo changes that expose the town's vampire-heavy history. Much like the film's title suggests, the ageless nature of this twist of fate brings these brothers closer together through superhuman circumstances.

5 Oculus (2013)

Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites in Oculus.
Relativity Media

Among the many startling horror projects headed by Mike Flanagan, Oculus continues his calling card of getting up close and personal with familial trauma alongside traditional elements of horror. Kaylie and Tim have been followed into their adulthood by their parents' devastating deaths tied to the Lasser Glass, an ancient mirror that welcomes otherworldly presences. When Tim is charged with murder, it's up to Kaylie to expose his innocence and show that the true culprit is not from this earthly realm. The nightmarish imagery in this film almost pales in comparison to the terrifying realities the siblings face.

4 Gretel & Hansel (2020)

Sophia Lillis as Gretel and Samuel J. Leakey as Hansel.
United Artists Releasing

Oz Perkins's reinterpretation of the classic Grimm brothers story "Hansel and Gretel," Gretel & Hansel is a trademark dark fairy tale, crawling with atmospheric odes to the storybooks of old with a more modern inner core. As the titular siblings, Sophia Lillis and Samuel Leakey bring a close-knit connection to this ancient tale, with Gretel taking on the role of the provider who will do anything to keep herself and her younger brother safe. A New York Times review said that this film is "essentially the story of a young woman coming into her power."

3 Nope (2022)

Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya in Nope.
Universal Pictures

The latest in Jordan Peele's growing arsenal of horror masterpieces, Nope was met with incredible box office success. As a story that follows alien arrival on Earth, Peele takes it into meta territory with commentary on the idea of spectacle and how far entertainers will go to ensure a good show. Siblings OJ and Emerald Haywood are at the center of this, portrayed in dynamic duo fashion by Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer. OJ's soft-spoken exterior and Emerald's bright vivacity blend together throughout the face of unexplainable events, and they couldn't have caught the elusive creature on film without each other's unique approach.

2 Goodnight Mommy (2014)

Lukas and Elias Schwarz in Goodnight Mommy.
Playtime

Not to be confused with the more modern and identically named American remake, Goodnight Mommy is originally a chilling Austrian piece that zooms in closer on an already strained parent-child relationship. Following their mother's plastic surgery, young twin brothers Lukas and Elias start to suspect that her facial structure isn't the only thing that's changed since her homecoming. The two think that she may have been replaced after her odd attitude and actions start to scare them. Given the final reveal of this film, the brothers' connection might be the strongest sibling bond of all on this list, since it extends far beyond the grave.

1 Ginger Snaps (2000)

Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle in Ginger Snaps.
Unapix Entertainment Productions

As Ginger Snaps progresses, the story's die-hard sibling dynamics transform into tragedy. Sisters Ginger and Brigitte are almost as close to the tempting embrace of death as they are to each other. According to a Guardian review, besides the obvious lycanthropy, "there is something efficiently creepy about the enclosed world of two alienated young women in suburbia." One night under a full moon, Ginger is bitten by a werewolf after her first period arrives, and thus begins her emotional extension into the form of a creature much more monstrous than any emo teenager. She and Brigitte struggle together to find a cure, which culminates in this film's heartbreaking final act.
