The time has come for House of the Dragon to arrive on HBO and HBO Max with the Game of Thrones spinoff reaching its premiere date. Set hundreds of years before the events of its parent series, House of the Dragon will follow an all-new cast of characters with completely different storylines. House Targaryen will play a major part in the story, showing fans what happened with Daenerys Targaryen's ancestors long before she would become the "Mad Queen."

As of now, the spinoff series hasn't been officially renewed for season, and that's likely due to HBO waiting to see just how well-received the new show is before committing to another season. With that said, series showrunners Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal are already looking ahead to where things can go in season 2. Speaking with Collider ahead of the season 1 premiere, Condal explained how a plan has been mapped for the potential second season.

"I think we have a fairly good plan laid out. Plans like that always have to be fairly broad, yet you have an idea of landmarks, and places that you want to go, and a sense of an end point, which I think is really important, particularly with this story. There’s 170 years of history in front of us, so you have to figure out, at what point do you do lower the curtain on this particular story? We’ve always had a good sense of that. I think we have a good plan for season 2, if HBO is willing and eager to continue telling the story with us."

Season 2 Has Plenty of Story Potential

Should the series get renewed, the second season would dive deeper into the history of House Targaryen. Condal goes on to tease some of the Targaryen-based stories that could be further explored in season 2, but he adds that whether or not a renewal happens will depend upon how much fans enjoy season 1.

"There is really 300 years of Targaryen history to explore, and there are many stories within there that are really fascinating. There’s the story of the conquest, the story before the conquest, the Targaryens leaving Old Valyria. You have a tale like this, where the Targaryens have dragons and are in power. And then, there are also stories where the Targaryens no longer have dragons, but are still in power. What changes there, and how is that different? It’s a very rich tapestry. It’s a rich landscape. I think the fan base is willing and eager. There’s a lot of storytelling left in this world, if people want it."

House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, 2022.
