HBO's Game of Thrones may have ended in 2019, but the network has wasted no time in continuing to explore the rich world created by author George R.R. Martin. The latest entry in the franchise is House of the Dragon, a prequel series that covered a period of roughly two decades, chronicling the tumultuous reign of King Viserys Targaryen and the bitter power struggle that ultimately destroyed the once-great House Targaryen. Following a successful debut season, showrunner Ryan Condal has revealed more about what viewers can expect from the upcoming second season.

In a recent interview at Deadline's Contenders TV panel, Condal explained that season two will return to the more traditional rhythms of storytelling that made the original series so popular. He described House of the Dragon as a Shakespearean or Greek tragedy, with a focus on a house tearing itself apart from within. Condal also revealed that he is particularly excited to explore the aftermath of Viserys' death and how it will impact the various factions within the world of Westeros. With all the pieces set on the board, there are sure to be plenty of twists and turns as the story progresses.

"I’m excited to pick up where we left off. Now we get to fall into the more traditional rhythms of storytelling and Game of Thrones. We’ve always talked about this particular tale, George [R.R. Martin] has too, of being a Shakespearean or Greek tragedy. This series is very much about a house tearing itself apart from within. Now that all those pieces have been set on the board, I’m really excited to tell the next chapter, to see what happens now that Viserys is gone and no longer keeping a lid on things."
