There is still a long wait for Deadpool and Wolverine fans to see Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman bring the Marvel characters together in Deadpool 3. While there is still a lot of details about the pair’s MCU outing, Hugh Jackman has strongly suggested the movie will feature time travel and confirmed that it will not mess with the existing timeline of Logan.

The announcement that Hugh Jackman would be reprising his role of Wolverine one last time – not something we’ve heard before – in Deadpool 3 took many people by surprise earlier this year. Since then, there have been a lot of questions raised about exactly how Jackman’s Wolverine will be able to fit into the MCU, especially with a new iteration of the character expected to arrive with the rest of the X-Men in several years’ time. While speaking on Sirius XM, Jackman confirmed that nothing will impact how his last movie, Logan, ended, but also suggested that the MCU’s multiverse story will allow the freedom to integrate this new story into the character’s world. He said:

“But all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines, now we can go back because, you know, it's science. And so I don't have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me, and I think probably to the fans too.”

Will Deadpool 3’s Wolverine Be a Multiverse Variant?

There are many ways in which Deadpool 3 could handle the inclusion of Wolverine without encroaching on the journey the character has already taken. With the film having been described as a multiverse movie, the most prominent fan-theory is that the film will see Jackman playing a variant of Wolverine, which would mean that this character would not be having the same life as his Fox Universe counterpart. Of course, that theory would have to explain whether the variant was from the MCU or another universe entirely.

Another theory linked to ability of Wade Wilson to, tongue-in-cheek, skip back in time to a number of pivotal moments at the end of Deadpool 2 to change the past. While these scenes were mostly used to poke fun at Reynolds’ previous comic book failings, including his Green Lantern movie, one of the scenes did see Deadpool going back to his appearance in X-Men: Wolverine to “right a wrong.” Whether this could play a role in bringing Deadpool and Wolverine together is just another possible way things could go down.

Of course, with Deadpool 3 not being released until 2024, it will be some time before we get to see the bigger picture about how the movie will fit into the MCU, and how it will give Jackman one last free run at Wolverine outside of the story he has already told. Expect to see more details come through later in 2023 once filming finally gets underway on what is one of the most anticipated movies of the MCU’s upcoming slate.
