X-Men star Hugh Jackman has confirmed his return as Wolverine in the upcoming MCU sequel Deadpool 3. Taking to social media, Jackman shared Ryan Reynolds’ sudden announcement video, responding to the idea of playing Logan one more time with a simple, “Yeah, sure.”

Thanks to Ryan Reynolds’ penchant for jokes and japes, it’s sometimes difficult to take the man at his word. But, with Hugh Jackman himself taking to social media to confirm the news, Marvel fans can now really allow themselves to get excited at the prospect of Deadpool versus Wolverine in Deadpool 3.

Reynolds rather suddenly shared a video to his Twitter account yesterday, beginning with, "Hey, everyone. We're extremely sad to have missed D23, but we have been working extremely hard on the next Deadpool film for a good long while now." Reynolds continued saying, "I had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character. Find new depth and motivation, new meaning. Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart."

After calling Deadpool 3 “an incredible challenge that has formed me to reach down deep inside,” Reynolds adds that he has “...nothing. Yeah. Completely up here. And Terrifying. But, we did have one idea."

That idea then appears in the form of Hugh Jackman himself. "Hey Hugh. You wanna play Wolverine one more time?" Reynolds asks. Jackman, who last played Wolverine in the superb Logan back in 2017 then replies with a casual, "Yeah, sure Ryan.”

So, it seems that Deadpool 3 will not only bring the Merc With A Mouth to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.

The announcement that Jackman will return has seemingly come out of nowhere, with the long-running X-Men star stating multiple times over the last few years that he would not reprise the role again.

"The fact that I'm hearing about this from you, and there's nothing in my inbox from Kevin Feige, means it's probably --- no matter what idea I came up with --- not on the table,” Jackman said last year during an appearance on Jake's Takes YouTube channel. “Let's just be clear there. Now, I realized before we shot Logan, I was like, 'We got the idea.' We knew what it was going to be-ish. And I thought, 'This is it.' And that really helped me. It really helped knowing I was going into my last season that it was my last season, that I made the most of it. It's still a character I hold close to my heart, but I know it's done. Tell that to whoever you want, but please tell it to Ryan [Reynolds]. Because he doesn't believe it, he thinks I'm joking."

Directed by Shawn Levy, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, Deadpool 3 is now scheduled to be released on September 6, 2024.
