Along with their extensive list of movies and live-action TV shows, Marvel Studios is also releasing its newest animated series on Disney+ later this year in the form of I Am Groot, and along with the titular twig, it looks like the series will feature other members of the Guardians of the Galaxy team. In a series of storyboards from the portfolio of artist Mark Hurtado, Drax the Destroyer is seen alongside Groot in a couple of the panels suggesting that other members of the group could also appear.

The storyboards, which can be seen below, were shared by Twitter account Guardians of The Galaxy News, and show Drax bring engrossed playing Donkey Kong on a retro handheld console, while "Baby" Groot attempts to get his attention, leading to the latter stealing the machine away and playing the game himself. From the images, it is clear that the series, or at least this set of boards, is set sometime between the first two Guardians movies based on Groot's size and appearance. Whether the series will have a longer timeline that fills in a number of moments from his "growing up" from the end of the original Guardians of the Galaxy through to his adolescent appearance in Avengers: Endgame is not known, but either way, it looks like there will be plenty of fun for Groot fans in the show.

While the storyboards do suggest an early return for the Guardians of the Galaxy favorite Drax, it is very possible that Dave Bautista will not be providing the voice of the character in the animated series. In What If…? Drax was voiced by voice actor Fred Tatasciore. What If…? executive producer Brad Winderbaum said in an interview at the time, "I saw that, too. It's my understanding that everybody was asked in some way, shape or form, either through their agents or directly. I don't know really what happened behind the scenes there, but certainly, we would have loved for him to be in the show. So there's probably some miscommunication somewhere."

Bautista has been pretty vocal about how he feels that the character of Drax hasn't perhaps been given the full service that he deserved in the MCU, and that is one of the reasons he has cited as his reason for wanting to move on from the character after Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3. He previously said, "That role changed the trajectory of my life. It's always going to be special to me. Now that I'm four films in...I really wished they would have invested more in Drax, personally. Because I think Drax has more of a story to tell. I think Drax has a really interesting backstory which they dropped the ball on. That's no dig on Marvel. They had their slate, I know what they're focused on, that's what they have slated out. But man, I think they really missed the ball on Drax. He has such a great backstory."

Whether or not that is the reason for his absence from What If…?, or if his growing schedule didn't allow, we will find out more about I Am Groot and its additional cast sometime later in the year.
