It's going to be a one season run for the new series adaptation of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Premiering on Prime Video in October, the series garnered mixed reviews over its single season, culminating with the finale on Nov. 12. Presumably, the viewership on the streaming service wasn't much better than the reviews, as Deadline now reports that the show has been axed.

Sara Goodman wrote this new take on I Know What You Did Last Summer, which is based on the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan. The good news about the cancelation is that the series did not end with a cliffhanger, providing a conclusion to the mystery at the heart of season 1. Like the other versions, the story of the show follows a group of teenagers stalked by a mysterious stranger thought to have been killed by the teens the prior summer on graduation night.

Featuring an ensemble cast, the show stars Madison Iseman, Brianne Tju, Ezekiel Goodman, Ashley Moore, Sebastian Amoruso, Fiona Rene, Cassie Beck, Brooke Bloom, Bill Heck, Sonya Balmores, and Spencer Sutherland. Goodman executive produced with Shay Hatten, Original Film's Neal H. Moritz, and Pavun Shetty as well as Atomic Monster's James Wan, Rob Hackett, and Michael Clear. Original producer Erik Feig also served as an executive producer.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in legacy sequels, especially in regards to the horror genre. Blumhouse's Halloween was a tremendous hit at theaters in 2018 which inspired the resurrection of other horror franchises from the past. Because the original movie version of I Know What You Did Last Summer was a success at the time, perhaps Amazon hoped a new series would be the same.

Alas, that was apparently not the case. As we saw with the films, the potential for a continuation of the story beyond the unveiling of the initial mystery was always there. There were three movies in the original film trilogy, though the first movie was certainly the most successful. Featuring an all-star cast, it starred Ryan Phillipe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Jennifer Love Hewitt. A smash hit at the box office at the time, the film has since become known as one of the most well-known horror titles of the 1990s.

The first sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, continued the story by bringing back the surviving characters for another round with the Fisherman. I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, the third installment, was released directly to DVD in 2006. It serves in part as a reboot of the story by following a new cast of characters who've similarly covered up a death only to be picked off by a mysterious killer the next year.

You can watch the first and only season of the I Know What You Did Last Summer series streaming on Prime Video.
