Dimension Films today announced plans to make a feature film based on the hugely popular and entertaining classic television show Welcome Back, Kotter with Ice Cube attached to star in the title role. Ice Cube and Matt Alvarez are producing the project through their production company, Cube Vision, along with Andrew Lazar. Tom Brady is in negotiations to write the script and direct. The announcement was made today by Bob Weinstein. Dimension acquired the motion picture rights from the original creators of the television series, Gabe Kaplan and Alan Sacks.

Welcome Back, Kotter is about a brash, young teacher teacher (Ice Cube) who returns to his tough, inner city alma-mater, where he's assigned to teach a new generation of the same sort of underprivileged, unmotivated, troublemaking students that he used to be.

Bob Weinstein stated, "We are excited to introduce 'Kotter' to a new generation, with Ice Cube putting his own brand of comedy on this legendary character."

"There was no bigger fan of the original show than me, and I'm very excited to be able to put a new twist on it," said Ice Cube.

Gabe Kaplan said, "We were skeptical about selling Kotter because making a great movie from a TV show can be challenging. After meeting with the Weinsteins, we knew they were the right ones to bring this project - which has been beloved by so many people over the years - to the big screen."

The original television series Welcome Back, Kotter, starring Hollywood legend John Travolta and Gabe Kaplan, aired between 1975 and 1979 and received four Emmy nominations.

Richard Saperstein, head of production for Dimension Films, Matthew Stein, senior vice president of production, and Alex Franklin, director of development, will oversee the project on behalf of Dimension.
