Frozen fans everywhere are eager to know when they will be able to return to Arendelle to catch up with Elsa, Anna, Christophe, Olaf and Sven. In a recent interview, Idina Menzel has made it clear that no matter how long it takes for Frozen 3 to be made, she will always be up to return and voice Elsa, but as of yet, she has not heard anything on whether development on a new movie has begun at all. While this is not a great update for those wanting to see more from the franchise, knowing that Menzel will be part of it whenever it happens will be some reassurance.

It is almost a decade since Frozen burst onto the big screen as a musical extravaganza that took the world by storm and delivered the first step in one of the biggest Disney franchises ever. Since then, there has been one outright sequel as well as a number of shorts, including Frozen Fever and Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, and the TV series At Home With Olaf and Olaf Presents. However, while an endless run of new material is one thing, it is Frozen 3 that everyone wants, as the latest comments by Menzel are the closest thing there has been to an update for a long while. She told People:

“I hope [Frozen 3 is in the works], but I don't know. Anytime I can be 80 and play a blonde animated girl who is, like, 15 — who has amazing arms, by the way, I love that about her.”

Frozen 3 Will Have Competition From Other Disney Movies

Just like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney has to be selective about which movies they make and put out. While fans of Frozen are desperate for news of when they may see a sequel, it has only been three years since Frozen 2 was released. It took six years for that sequel to arrive, so there could be quite a wait yet before Frozen 3 makes it to cinemas, and in that time, Disney has other movies that could potentially take priority.

Recently the release of movies such as Coco and Encanto have proven that when they get it right, Disney really gets it right. Encanto, in particular, was a big surprise last year when it not only made an impact in movie terms but also saw its Lin-Manuel Miranda songs dominate the music charts and give Disney their biggest chart success ever. In the aftermath of the movie’s popularity, it was revealed that plans are being put in place to turn Encanto into the next big franchise from the House of Mouse.

Having recently added Turning Red and Lightyear to their animated offerings, Disney already has a number of movies coming, including Strange World this November and Elemental coming in 2023, along with several other announced projects. Where Frozen 3 might fit into the schedule is something that currently seems to only be known by the big chiefs of Disney, and unfortunately, until they are ready to reveal anything, we can only continue to speculate on the future of the franchise.
