Iman Vellani, who’s set to make her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel in the eponymous Disney+ original, seems to be a true Marvel fan. Ms. Marvel comics’ series creator, Sana Amanat has revealed that the young actress sent her a list of feedback for all the previous MCU films, critiquing their filmmaking aspects.

Iman Vellani is also a short film director and Ms. Marvel would be her first credit as an actor in television production, whereas the series follow-up The Marvels (2023) will be her feature film debut. It looks like she has used her knowledge of filmmaking to research the previous MCU films and give her own feedback on them to Amanat, which, in turn, suggests that her commitment to the role is comprehensive.

Speaking to Empire about fans’ expectations from the show, Kamala’s character iteration, and the show’s narrative, Sana Amanat, who co-wrote the comic book series for Ms. Marvel said:

She gave me a list of feedback on every single Marvel movie. Kevin Feige is like her Carol Danvers.

Amanat’s statement indicated that she views Vellani as a protégé to Kevin Feige. Vellani, at such a young age, has already helmed three short films besides acting in them and possesses great knowledge of cinema, which she has apparently utilized to study the MCU lore. And given that her character in the series is an Avengers fan, especially that of Captain Marvel, the idea of giving her critique of MCU films would have worked for her when it comes to understanding the cast continuity of the franchise.

Upon being cast as Ms. Marvel, fans were quick to find her Letterboxd account in which she has reviewed a string of films, including Captain Marvel, the sequel of which will feature her in a prominent role. However, the actor seems to have reservations about the film as she gave it a two-star rating on the platform. However, her consensus clarifies that the ratings have nothing to do with Brie Larson’s performance in the movie. She says,

These stars are not for Brie Larson, I will sacrifice my own life…for Brie Larson

Her statement clarified her respect and love for her co-star and her character’s inspiration as Kamala transitions into a superhero. It’s interesting to see such an actor with a detailed approach to the franchise finally join it as a prominent member, who’ll be introduced next to Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight.

Iman Vellani plays Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel. She is a Pakistani-American teenager who writes Captain Marvel-based fan-fiction before she gains superpowers of her own. It would be interesting to see Iman Vellani’s Kamala going through a true origin story and eventually making grounds for a new line of heroes in the MCU. The actor would bring the first Muslim super-figure on-screen in live-action via Ms. Marvel, debuting June 8, 2022, exclusively on Disney+.

The series will consist of six episodes. Bisha K. Ali (Loki) will serve as the series creator, with Freddy Syborn serving as the head writer, joined by A.C. Bradley (What If…?) as a consultant. The show stars Iman Vellani, Aramis Knight, Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Mohan Kapur, Matt Lintz, Travina Springer, Anjali Bhimani, and Fawad Khan.
