According to Variety, Imax is developing and will exec produce Surfari, a 3-D film profiling surfing. The pic is skedded for release in 2007.

News was announced Tuesday at the 2005 Giant Screen Theater Assn. Intl. Conference in Boston, Mass.

Surfari is written by Sam George, editor of Surfer magazine and a surfing author-filmmaker. He will co-produce with fellow surfing journeyman Paul Taublieb, chief consultant to ESPN on the creation of the X Games, and also a writer-producer of action sports programming for ABC, ESPN, NASCAR, NBC and Fox Sports Net.

A director has yet to be announced.

"The popularity of Hollywood blockbusters in Imax's format is driving expansion of our theater network and in turn presenting Imax with opportunities to develop more groundbreaking, original productions such as 'Surfari,' " said Greg Foster, chairman and prexy of Imax Filmed Entertainment.

"This film is going to profile the hottest surfing talent and make moviegoers feel like they're inside the tube, attempting to conquer Mother Nature's biggest and most dangerous waves," Foster added.
