Back in March 2014, Disney announced that The Incredibles 2 is finally moving forward, with The Incredibles writer-director Brad Bird returning to the helm. While there is still much we don't know about the animated movie sequel, the studio announced today that The Incredibles 2 will hit theaters on June 21, 2019. As of now, no other movies have been slated for release on that day, but it comes just one week after Warner Bros.' Justice League Part 2 opens on June 14, 2019.

Writer-director Brad Bird revealed last month that the Incredibles 2 script is almost done. It isn't known yet if the filmmaker has finished his work on the script, or when we might get the first story details. He did tease in April that his sequel will examine superhero movie trends, which is fitting since his sequel will open between DC's Justice League Part 2 and Marvel's Inhumans (July 12, 2019).

When The Incredibles debuted in 2004, the superhero genre was just starting to take off, just four years after the X-Men. Four years later, Marvel launched their Cinematic Universe with Iron Man, paving the way for a lucrative slate of superhero films that keeps growing at an exponential rate. Unfortunately, the director hasn't divulge any specific plot details yet, but now that an official release date has been handed out, hopefully we'll learn more about the animated sequel.

The Incredibles centered on a family of superheroes, whose lives are changed forever after the government bans all heroes. Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson), his wife Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) and their kids Dash (Spencer Fox), Violet (Sarah Vowell) and Jack Jack (Eli Fucile and Maeve Andrews) are forced to live a normal suburban life, until a new super-villain named Syndrome (Jason Lee) emerges and threatens to destroy the world. Samuel L. Jackson also starred as Frozone, a superhero friend of the family. It hasn't been confirmed if any of these cast members will be back for The Incredibles 2.

The Incredibles took in an impressive $261.4 million domestic and $631.4 million worldwide during its theatrical release, from a $92 million budget. We'll have to wait and see if The Incredibles 2 can out-perform the original when it hits theaters nearly five years from now.
