It's been quite the week for Independence Day fans, with the debut of two new previews along with four posters for the long-awaited sequel Resurgence. With the Memorial Day weekend upon us, 20th Century Fox has released the first clip from this follow-up, reuniting two stars from the original movie, Brent Spiner as Dr. Okun and Bill Pullman as President Whitmore. As you can see in this clip, Dr. Okun emerges from an apparent slumber to shed some new light on alien activity.

This scene, which debuted at the 20th Century Fox YouTube page, also gives us a glimpse at William Fichtner's General Adams, who is seen entering a room filled with monitors showcasing the activity of the aliens they currently have in captivity. Adams mentions that their "screaming" has gotten worse, when Dr. Okun meets President Whitmore again, who comments that he's "awake." We're not sure what the former President is referring to in this scene, but when Whitmore's daughter Patricia (Maika Monroe) asks why the aliens are "screaming," Dr. Okun reveals that they aren't screaming, they're celebrating.

While we don't know for sure, it's likely that these aliens are celebrating the arrival of their extraterrestrial cohorts, who return to Earth 20 years after the events of 1996's ID4. Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers a global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner all reprise their roles from the original 1996 blockbuster. Independence Day: Resurgence will also introduce new characters played by Liam Hemsworth, Angelababy, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward and Jessie Usher. This highly-anticipated sequel will make summer 2016 one to remember when it explodes onto screens worldwide June 24. The movie will square off against STX Entertainment's The Free State of Jones when it hits theaters in just a few short weeks.

The original Independence Day shattered opening weekend and total box office records, becoming the year's top-grossing film. It also became the first movie in history to gross over $500 million internationally. It's domestic take of $306.1 million in 1996 would equate to $594.3 million today, when adjusted for inflation. We'll have to wait and see if the sequel can out-gross its predecessor when Independence Day 2 hits theaters on June 24. Until then, take a look at the first clip below, featuring Dr. Okun and President Whitmore.
