Before Independence Day 2 went into production, there was talk that director Roland Emmerich may shoot two sequels back-to-back, but that never materialized. There was also talk of Will Smith returning as Steven Hiller, but that never happened. Shortly after the first trailer was released, a viral website revealed Hiller was killed in 2007, after alien technology malfunctioned. ID4 2 is in theaters June 24.
