'They messed with the wrong planet!' Shouts the tagline of the new Independence Day: Resurgence poster that arrives courtesy of IMAX. This sequel twenty years in the making is coming to the immersive screen format this summer. And it promises to be the epic to end all epics, as it is poised to obliterate the world a second time. This crafty one-sheet repurposes the iconic 'Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima' photo from World War II, giving the image new meaning as an Alien craft the size of the Indian Ocean hovers above our atmosphere.

From director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, 1996's Independence Day shattered opening weekend and total box office records, becoming the year's top-grossing film. It also became the first movie in history to gross over $500 million internationally. But Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers a global spectacle on an unimaginable scale.

Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner all reprise their roles from the original 1996 blockbuster. New additions to the cast for Independence Day: Resurgence include Liam Hemsworth, Angelababy, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward and Jessie Usher. This highly-anticipated sequel will make summer 2016 one to remember when it explodes onto screens worldwide June 24. The movie will square off against STX Entertainment's The Free State of Jones when it hits theaters in just a few short weeks.

Before Independence Day 2 went into production, there was talk that director Roland Emmerich may shoot two sequels back-to-back, but that never materialized. There was also talk of Will Smith returning as Steven Hiller, but that never happened. Shortly after the first trailer was released, a viral website revealed Hiller was killed in 2007, after alien technology malfunctioned. ID4 2 is in theaters June 24. And it promises to be the thrill-ride of the summer movie going season.
