Last month, 20th Century Fox released a new clip from Independence Day: Resurgence that featured a glimpse at Brackish Okun (Brent Spiner), one of the many returning characters from the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day. This clip features the good doctor reuniting with President Whitmore (Bill Pullman), who looks surprised to see him, commenting that he's "awake." At the time, we didn't know what Whitmore was referring to, but today we have a new viral video that sheds some light on Dr. Okun's background, and that he's actually been in a coma for the past 20 years.

This video, which debuted on 20th Century Fox's YouTube channel, sheds new light on Dr. Okun, one of the heroes of the War of 1996. This video reveals that Okun graduated from Cal Tech in 1972, and he was recruited for a highly-classified position at Area 51, where his knowledge of the aliens was essential in the humans' victory in the War of 1996. Tragically, during an alien attack, Okun suffered critical injuries and slipped into a coma, where he remained, presumably, until the events of Independence Day: Resurgence.

Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers a global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner all reprise their roles from the original 1996 blockbuster. Independence Day: Resurgence will also introduce new characters played by Liam Hemsworth, Angelababy, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward and Jessie Usher. This highly-anticipated sequel will make summer 2016 one to remember when it explodes onto screens worldwide June 24. The movie will square off against STX Entertainment's The Free State of Jones when it hits theaters in just a few short weeks.

The original Independence Day shattered opening weekend and total box office records, becoming the year's top-grossing film. It also became the first movie in history to gross over $500 million internationally. It's domestic take of $306.1 million in 1996 would equate to $594.3 million today, when adjusted for inflation. We'll have to wait and see if the sequel can out-gross its predecessor when Independence Day 2 hits theaters on June 24. Until then, take a look at this new video that gives us a better look at Dr. Brackish Okun in Independence Day: Resurgence.
