One of the most iconic film franchises of all time will soon be receiving a new installment. The latest entry in the Indiana Jones franchise, tentatively titled Indiana Jones 5, will continue the story of everyone's favorite adventurer. More than 13 years after the previous installment and coming off years of delays, the film is finally set for a June 30, 2023 release.

With filming only having wrapped recently, there is still a lot we don't know. However, we know that Harrison Ford will be back as the whip-cracking adventurer once again in the final installment of the franchise. In addition, this will be the first Indiana Jones film not directed by Steven Spielberg or written by George Lucas, though Spielberg remains a producer.

Now, with a little over a year until the highly anticipated release, it's time to look at everything we know about Indiana Jones 5. Who can we expect to see in the cast alongside Ford? What will the plot be about? What adventures will Indy pursue? Where and when can we expect to see it released? And what else should audiences know about the film?

Cast: What We Know

As mentioned, longtime fans will be glad to know that Harrison Ford will be returning to his starring role as Indiana Jones. There have been rumors in recent years of Indy being recast or even replaced with a different lead character. The 79-year-old Ford reassured fans and ruled out any chance of a recast, saying in a 2019 interview with NBC's Today, "When I'm gone, he's gone. It's easy."

Ford is currently the only confirmed cast member returning from previous installments. Karen Allen, who portrayed Marion Ravenwood in both Raiders of the Lost Ark and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was rumored to be reprising her role. However, nothing about a potential return from Allen has been confirmed.

In addition to Ford, the film will feature names such as Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Shaunette Renee Wilson, and Antonio Banderas. While their casting has been announced, there have been no details surrounding their potential roles or storylines. It is believed that Waller-Bridge may play the female lead opposite Ford due to her name recognition and top billing in cast announcements.

Plot: What We Know

At this time, there are few details about the specifics of the plot. However, we can expect it to build off the story of Indy established in the previous four films. There are rumors that it may involve time travel, continuing the franchise's supernatural themes. According to director James Mangold, the film may see Indy search for the Fountain of Youth while facing off against his old foes, the Nazis, in 1960s New York City.

Additionally, we know that this film will be the last in the franchise. Due to Ford's advanced age, it makes sense to have a set plan for the end of the character. The film will likely feature some sort of "end" for Indy, whether that be his death, retirement, or something else. We can continue to speculate about what the plot has in store, but we cannot make any sort of concrete prediction until more information is released. All that audiences can do now is wait and see.

Release Date

Indiana Jones 5 has had a complicated release schedule over the last few years. When the film was first announced in 2016, it was set for release on July 19, 2019. It was later shifted to 2020, replaced with The Lion King remake, and pushed to 2021 due to Spielberg's busy schedule working on West Side Story. The COVID pandemic saw it further delayed until July 29, 2022. Finally, in October 2021, a release date of June 30, 2023, was confirmed.

It is currently scheduled to be theatrically released, though as is the case with COVID, that may change if conditions warrant.

Everything Else: What We Know

As mentioned, the fifth Indiana Jones film will be the last in the franchise. We don't yet know how the film will end the franchise, but announcing this in advance means that fans will have time to say goodbye to the beloved adventurer they have watched for more than 40 years. Final installments are more heavily scrutinized than earlier films because fans will almost definitely have wildly varying opinions on how the story should conclude.

We can likely expect the same world travels and adventures in Indiana Jones 5 that we have seen in the previous four installments. However, the film may try to step back from delving too far into the supernatural after the much-maligned aliens and telekinesis plotline from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

In any case, we will have to wait and see if Indiana Jones 5 is a worthy conclusion to this four-decade franchise.
