Indy is back, as a new image from the upcoming sequel Indiana Jones 5 offers our first look at Harrison’s Ford return as the beloved adventurer. Shared courtesy of the official Indiana Jones Twitter account, the image centers on a familiar looking silhouette, as Harrison Ford dons the hat and whip once more. Alongside the first look image, we are also reminded that Indiana Jones 5 will leap into theaters in 2023.

This newly released image is our first official look at Harrison’s Ford as Indiana Jones, and puts the archeologist in a familiar setting: walking across a rickety rope bridge while exploring a cave. While the image does not offer much information in terms of the wider plot of Indiana Jones 5, just the sight of Ford back in the costume is surely enough to have audiences excited.

Plot details have been kept secret for now, or at least the studio has tried to keep them as secret as possible, but thanks to rumors and speculation it is expected that Indiana Jones 5 will take the franchise into outer space. While Indy himself may not blast into the stratosphere, reports have claimed that the highly anticipated sequel will reunite Indiana with his old enemies, the Nazis, through their involvement in the 60s Space Race.

Directed by James Mangold, with a script co-written by Mangold, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth, Indiana Jones 5 stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Toby Jones, and Antonio Banderas, and Mads Mikkelsen alongside Harrison Ford.

Mikkelsen, who rumors have claimed will star as "a Nazi scientist enlisted into NASA by the United States government to work on the space agency's moon landing initiative," has teased the old school, Spielbergian feel of the sequel saying, “[Raiders of the Lost Ark] was one of my favorite films, and it just oozed that golden period of serials from the 1940s — and that’s in the fifth film as well. They’re going heavily back to the first and second film and getting that original feel, the original Indy, something dense and epic. It felt like a Spielberg film, though it’s obviously James making it with the same vision.”

Indiana Jones Will Never Be Recast, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy Has Confirmed

Indiana Jones movie with Harrison Ford
Paramount Pictures

While this may be the last time we see Harrison Ford in the role of Indiana Jones, fans can rest easy, as Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy recently confirmed that the iconic character will never be recast. "There should be moments along the way when you learn thing,” she began. “[Solo] may have certainly been a learning moment. Some people have talked about how, well, maybe Solo should have been a TV show. But even doing Solo as a TV show without Harrison Ford as Han Solo ... It's the same thinking. Maybe I should have recognized this before. We would never make Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford. Having just finished the fifth movie, I can tell you, there wasn't a day I wasn't on set where I wasn't like, 'Yes -- this is Indiana Jones.'"

Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled for release on June 30, 2023.
