It was announced back in December that Marvel Comics was working on the Infinity Countdown miniseries before the release of Infinity War. Infinity Countdown is written by Guardians of the Galaxy's Gerry Duggan and drawn by Original Sin's Mike Deodato Jr. To celebrate the upcoming release of the first issue, Marvel released the Infinity Countdown teaser trailer, which has angered some fans who were expecting it to be the second full-length trailer for Infinity War. However, the video goes behind-the-scenes to explain how the story came together along with what characters are featured.
The Infinity Stones were all obliterated in the build-up to 2015's Secret Wars event, but four of them have turned up in recent Legacy stories. The synopsis for Infinity Countdown starts under the premise that all of the Stones have been scattered across the universe and a new battle ensues to collect them all. The story features Wolverine, Drax the Destroyer, Captain Marvel, and others, with the promise of even bringing Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four into the mix. The synopsis reads.
"The Infinity Stones. Individually, they grant their wielder great power. Together, they grant the power of a god. Newly reformed and scattered throughout the universe, these artifacts allow the ones who claim them their heart's desire. Now, as their locations are discovered, forces converge for a battle that will begin the universe down a dark path to the end. Jump onto this exciting ride that will lead to the biggest Infinity yet! Plus: The saga of the Infinity Stones - what they are and how they came to be! From creation to destruction to re-creation, this prose primer will tell you everything you need to know about the legendary cosmic gems!"
Infinity Countdown Prime was released last month and leads directly into Infinity Countdown Number 1 this month, with a cover that shows Loki, Wolverine, the Guardians of the Galaxy's Gamora, Captain Marvel, and a version of Adam Warlock in action. The stories are all independent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the new comic miniseries aims to tell a different story involving the Infinity Stones that many fans might even prefer to see on the big screen over what we're about to see in Infinity War.
In other Infinity War news, it was announced yesterday that the movie was being bumped up one week. The new official release date for the highly anticipated movie is now April 27th and fans are now clamoring for pre-sale information as well as some more footage from the movie since it's now less than two months away from hitting the big screen. The new Infinity Countdown series is a neat way to pass the time for Marvel fans before Infinity War hits theaters.
Infinity Countdown Number 1 hits newsstands on March 7th and it promises that battles will be fought, and that blood will be spilled. Heroes and villains are all aiming to get their hands on the precious Infinity Stones, so it will be interesting to see who makes it out of the mini-series alive. While we wait to find out, you can check out the brand-new teaser trailer ahead of next week's debut of Infinity Countdown below, courtesy of Marvel Entertainment's YouTube channel.
