The Russo Brothers have revealed that Thor will have a "really, really compelling story arc" compared to the rest of the characters in Infinity War. When we last saw the character at the end of Ragnarok, Asgard had been destroyed and he was about to have a meeting with Thanos after losing his hammer, having his father pass away, and fighting an intense battle with his sister which resulted in the loss of one of his eyes. In other words, Thor's entire reality has been turned upside down and his meeting with the Mad Titan doesn't look like it went too well.

The Russo Brothers previously said that Thor will have a "radical transformation" in Infinity War and now they're reiterating those thoughts, comparing him to Captain America's story where he was catching up with the modern world. Thor's story has changed drastically since the end of Ragnarok, so it will be interesting to see where the movie takes him. The directors note that wherever he's going, he can't come back. Joe Russo had this to say.

"So I think in Thor we have similar opportunities with that character in this movie is that he's going through a radical transformation and he's moving forward in a way where he can never go back, and that's always a fun place to be with a character as a storyteller."

Additionally, the Russo Brothers believe that Thor is a pivotal character for the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this time. Chris Hemsworth has been apprehensive about signing on to possibly do more Thor movies, but he and Taika Waititi have loosely discussed ideas for a 4th movie. But back to Infinity War, Thor is going to jump front and center. Joe Russo explains.

"I think between Ragnarok and this film, I think Thor has a really, really compelling arc. I think he's a pretty fascinating character, and I think he's going to jump to the forefront of people's mind, as a pivotal Marvel character, after Ragnarok and this."

The directing duo also spoke about working very closely with Taika Waititi when Ragnarok and Infinity War were both in production. They had to talk to the director about specifics in the story to make sure everything lined up and mention that they come from the same background. The Russo Brothers were really impressed with that Waititi pulled off with the third Thor movie. Joe Russo said.

"We grew up executing projects that were in a similar vein as Taika's sensibility. Arrested Development, Community. We jive very well with Taika, and with the direction he's taking that character in. I think that we always want and desire, as filmmakers, pathos as well, out of our characters. We find that humor and pathos in combination create a more profound experience for you. I think that Taika has done that very well in Ragnarok. We now get to take Thor on a really compelling journey."

While it the Russo Brothers promise the compelling storyline for Thor in Infinity War, it isn't clear if he'll play as pivotal role in the still untitled Avengers 4. However, by the end of Ragnarok, Thor is really starting to learn how to harness his powers in a way that he never was able to do before. That information combined with what the Russo Brothers had to say about the character along with the loose talks of a fourth Thor movie sure make it seem like he'll also be playing a pretty big role in Avengers 4. The just released trailer shows that Thor does have a confrontation with Thanos, and that he eventually teams up with Rocket Raccoon and Teenage Groot for a special mission out in space. From the looks of things, it apparently doesn't end well for the God of Thunder. For now, we'll just have to wait and see how this all turns out, and if Thor is still standing come 2019.
