Universal Pictures has released the first photo from Insidious Chapter 4, the highly-anticipated horror sequel that is set to hit theaters on October 20, 2017. This photo features returning franchise star Lin Shaye as Elise Rainier, which is fitting since the actress herself actually announced the sequel with the release of a special video back in May. It's possible that this photo could also hint that the first trailer may be just around the corner, but that has not confirmed at this time.

Entertainment Weekly debuted this new photo, which features both Lin Shaye and franchie newcomer Tessa Ferrer, who plays Aubrey in this horror sequel. No detials have been given about the plot, or how Aubrey fits into the story, but it seems that both Elise and Aubrey are in the mysterious place known as The Further. No plot details have been released, but this horror sequel will be directed by another newcomer to the franchise.

The video from May featured Lin Shaye flipping over a number of tarot cards, alongside Leigh Whannell, who wrote the script, with the cards revealing that the sequel will be directed by Adam Robitel, and that the movie will hit theaters on October 20, 2017. The movie will be going up Warner Bros. Geostorm, 20th Century Fox's The Mountain Between Us and The Weinstein Company's The War With Grandpa. The movie will also have to contend with Lionsgate's Saw 8 and Cloverfield 3, previously known as God Particle, on October 27, 2017

Adam Robitel made his feature film debut with 2014's The Taking of Deborah Logan, and he also wrote the screenplay for Blumhouse's Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, which hit theaters last fall. Original Insidious director James Wan is production alongside Blumhouse's Jason Blum, Oren Peli and Leigh Whannell. Steven Schneider, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Charles Layton serve as executive producers, with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions financing the film. Domestic distribution will be handled by Universal Pictures, while Sony will handle international distribution.

Last year's Insidious Chapter 3 served as a prequel to the first two movies, showing how psychic Elise Rainier used her abilities to help a teenage girl Stefanie Scott who had been haunted by a supernatural presence. Angus Sampson and Leigh Whannell also reprised their on-camera roles as Tucker and Specs in Insidious Chapter 3, but we'll have to wait and see if they'll return in Insidious Chapter 4. The original Insidious earned $54 million domestically and $97 million worldwide, from just a $1.5 million budget. The follow-up Insidious Chapter 2 fared much better in theaters, taking in $83.5 million domestically and $161.9 million worldwide from a $5 million budget. Insidious Chapter 3 earned $52.2 million domestically and $112.9 million worldwide from a $10 million budget. While we await more details on Insidious Chapter 4, take a look at this new photo with Lin Shaye and Tessa Ferrer below.
