It's been over four years since the last Insidious installment, Insidious: The Last Key. The franchise's fourth film would see Lin Shaye's return, alongside Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson. Shaye would reprise her role as Elise Rainer, as we see the parapsychologist face her most fearsome and personal haunting yet, drawing her back to her childhood home. Despite four entries into the Insidious franchise, we've yet to see a true sequel to Insidious: Chapter 2, which was released in 2013.

The first two films followed the Lambert family as they dealt with a demonic presence haunting their home and comatose child, Dalton Lambert (Ty Simpkins). Insidious 5 will continue this story and is set to release on July 7th, 2023. Patrick Wilson stars in the first two films as Josh Lambert, father to Dalton, and will return to the fifth installment reprising his role and directing the film. This will be Wilson's directorial debut. In an interview with Variety, the actor shared his excitement about helming the movie and his admiration for the franchise.

"I'm honored and thrilled to be at the helm of the next Insidious installment, which will provide an amazing chance to unpack everything the Lamberts went through a decade ago, as well as deal with the consequences of their choices. Directing the movie is both professionally and personally a full circle moment for me, and I am extremely grateful to be entrusted in continuing to tell this frightening and haunting story. Into the further we go..."

Fans only have to wait a year for the fifth movie in the Insidious franchise to arrive, so prepare to be terrified on July 7th, 2023.

As mentioned before, it's been nearly ten years since we have seen the Lambert family. Insidious: Chapter 3 was a prequel set before the haunting of the Bride in Black, and The Last Key followed Elise Rainier and a separate haunting that occurred at her childhood home. However, Chapter 5 is set ten years after Chapter 2, following Dalton Lambert as he begins college.

The film is currently in pre-production, with the only cast members now included being Patrick Wilson, Ty Simpkins, and Lin Shaye. Scott Teems (Halloween Kills) wrote the script based on a story by franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell who wrote the first two films. The July release date positions the horror film as a significant box office contender next summer, leading to excellent sales for the film. Since debuting in 2010, the Insidious franchise has earned over $500 million on a combined budget of less than $30 million.

Expect to see promotional material ramping up next year as Insidious prepares for its major comeback.
