We have the first trailer for Amazon's Invincible animated series, which is adapting the comic book of the same name. The trailer was revealed as part of a virtual panel with creator Robert Kirkman for this year's virtual edition of New York Comic Con. As we can see, The Walking Dead creator's take on the superhero genre will be a violent one. And speaking of The Walking Dead, Steven Yeun is along for the ride in the leading role.

The trailer opens with some voiceover by J.K. Simmons, who is playing Omni-Man, the father of Steven Yeun's Mark Grayson. The two are then seen playing a rather unique, super-powered game of catch. We then follow Mark as he takes out several bad guys in ultra-violent fashion. This is not going to be your average capes and tights comic book tale. That much is certain.

Invincible is an adult animated superhero series coming to Amazon Prime that revolves around 17-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who is a lot like every other guy his age, only his father is the most powerful superhero in the world, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). As Mark develops powers of his own, he finds that his father's legacy isn't quite as heroic as it seems. Robert Kirkman, during the panel, spoke about not shying away from the violence and instead embracing it.

"We're definitely not holding back on the violence at all. If anything, the violence is a little bit more intense. It's moving, it is at times a little bit more gruesome, which is cool. It's a very important element to the story. I think that it's kinda the secret sauce of Invincible. This is a mundane, domestic, everyday family dealing with family drama but it's juxtaposed against what it's like to be a superhero living in a world populated by superheroes."

Other cast members include Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Seth Rogen (Pineappel Express), Gillian Jacobs (Community), Mark Hamill (Star Wars), Jason Mantzoukas (The League) and Mae Whitman (Good Girls). Simon Racioppa (Teen Titans) is serving as showrunner. Robert Kirkman also revealed, somewhat reluctantly, that Star Trek alum Michael Dorn will be voicing Battle Beast in the series.

"We're definitely getting Battle Beast. 100 percent, definitely getting Battle Beast. We should have talked about this beforehand but I'll break protocol. He's 100 percent in the show. Michael Dorn is doing his voice. There's a scoop for this panel. I love Michael Dorn. He was absolutely amazing doing the voice. It's everything I've ever wanted. I was in the recording booth and I was almost crying. I cried a lot in the recording booth. It was a crazy dream come true."

The comic book series launched in 2003, wrapping up its run in 2018 after 144 issues. It is Robert Kirkman's second-longest running book behind The Walking Dead. During its run, it was met with widespread acclaim. Invincible season 1 arrives in 2021 on the Amazon Prime Video streaming service. Be sure to check out the new trailer for yourself.
