Joaquin Phoenix tries to find the meaning of his life, and succeeds in a bizarre fashion in the first trailer for Irrational Man, the latest from director Woody Allen. While this marks the first collaboration between Joaquin Phoenix and Woody Allen, Emma Stone starred in the filmmaker's last movie, Magic in the Moonlight. As is the case with most of the director's films, no plot details were released during production, but the first footage offers our first insight into the story.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as Abe Lewis, a philosophy professor who takes a job at a small college, and finds himself in the midst of an existential crisis. After striking up a relationship with one of his students (Emma Stone), he finally realizes his purpose in life, and becomes a changed man. Parker Posey also stars as one of Abe's colleagues, and the actress revealed in a recent interview that she didn't know very much about the entire story while on the set.

"I had no idea what the exact mood of the movie was. I had no idea how I fit in or how the other characters thought of me."

She also talked about how the absence of a full script made her rely on her co-stars, particularly Joaquin Phoenix. Here's what the actress had to say about her co-star.

"He's very in-the-moment, so I really enjoyed being in the water with him creatively."

Irrational Man will have its world premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival next month, before opening in theaters nationwide on July 17, through Sony Pictures Classics. With the release just a few months away, hopefully we'll get at least one more trailer for Irrational Man, which sheds some more light on the plot. While we wait for that, check out the first footage below.
