Back in June, Yahoo reported that actress Penélope Cruz was rumored to play the next Bond Girl in Bond 24, although that report was debunked just a few weeks later. As it turns out, that initial report may have been true after all, with Premiere France spotting the actress' name on Sony's recent release schedule update, where she was listed next to confirmed stars Daniel Craig (007/James Bond), Ralph Fiennes (M) and Naomie Harris (Moneypenny).

If it turns out to be true, Penélope Cruz, who turns 40 later this month, will be the oldest Bond girl in franchise history. Her husband Javier Bardem portrayed 007's nemesis Silva in 2012's Skyfall. Back in October, we reported that Kate Upton and Helen Flanagan were in contention for the coveted role, but we haven't heard anything else regarding their involvement since then. There is also a new report from that Swedish actresses Ida Engvoll and Disa Östrand have tested for the female lead.

Aside from Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes and Naomie Harris, the only other confirmed Bond 24 cast member is Ben Whishaw, who reprises his Skyfall role as gadget master Q. We also reported last week that Chiwetel Ejiofor is being eyed for the villain, which may be the iconic character Blofield, since MGM recently won back the rights to Blofield and the evil organization S.P.E.C.T.R.E. following a lengthy legal battle.

Sam Mendes is directing from a script by John Logan, with production scheduled to begin in October.
