Paramount is in negotiations with Edward Zwick to direct their upcoming sequel Jack Reacher 2, which has Tom Cruise set to reprise his role as the title character from 2012's Jack Reacher. The sequel reunites Edward Zwick and Tom Cruise for the first time since they collaborated on 2003's The Last Samurai. We reported back in December 2013 that Jack Reacher 2 was moving forward, based on the Lee Child novel Never Look Back, the 18th book in the author's Jack Reacher series, which was published in 2013.

Richard Wenk originally wrote the screenplay, with Edward Zwick and his longtime co-writer Marshall Herskovitz coming aboard to rewrite the script. The Never Look Back novel follows the title character as he returns to his old Virginia military base, where he is taking the new female commanding officer out to dinner. When Reacher arrives, she has been arrested, while Jack himself faces charges of assaulting a man and fathering a child with another woman. While Jack doesn't remember any of this happening, he becomes determined to find out the truth.
