Jai Courtney has officially signed on to play Kyle Reese in Terminator: Genesis, after the actor was almost forced to drop out of the sequel due to scheduling complications.

We reported last month that the actor landed the coveted role, although a deal needed to be worked out that would allow him to shoot both Terminator: Genesis and the Divergent sequel Insurgent, since the production schedules overlapped. Now that the deal has been finalized, Jai Courtney joins a cast that also includes Arnold Schwarzenegger as an aging T-800 Terminator, Jason Clarke as John Connor, Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, and J.K. Simmons as a detective who has been obsessed with the Terminator/Sarah Connor case since 1984.

In the original sci-fi action classic The Terminator, Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) was the soldier sent back in time by John Connor to protect his mother Sarah (Linda Hamilton), with Kyle eventually becoming John's father. No plot details have been confirmed for Terminator: Genesis, but it is said to be the first in a stand-alone trilogy, although the story will include elements from the previous films in this storied franchise.

We reported earlier this week that John Boyega is being considered to play the son of Miles Dyson, the Cyberdyne executive most directly responsible for the creation of Skynet. Joe Morton played Miles Dyson in 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which included a scene that featured his young son Danny, when the Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger), Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and John Connor (Edward Furlong) visited the Dyson home.

Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) is directing from a script by Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogridis, with production scheduled to begin at the end of April in New Orleans.

Jai Courtney can currently be seen in Summit's young adult adaptation Divergent, and he also stars in director Angelina Jolie's upcoming drama Unbroken.
