Jake Gyllenhaal will become royalty in his newest project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor has signed on for the lead role in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It is also reported that Gemma Arterton has joined the cast as well.

The film revolves around Gyllenhaal's character Dartan, a prince in 6th century Persia who forms an alliance with the princess Tamina (Arterton) to stop a treacherous nobleman from obtaining the Sands of Time, which would allow anyone to rule the world.

Mike Newell is directing from the script by Doug Miro & Carlo Bernard, Jordan Mechner, who created the Ubisoft video games, and Boaz Yakin. Production is slated to begin this July.
