With Daniel Craig stepping down from his franchise role as James Bond, there's been a lot of speculation as to whom the next 007 will be. As we've seen with The Little Mermaid, the subject of diversity and representation is often a part of these conversations, and some fans have been arguing the case for a female or black actor to take on the role in the next installment. Now, according to a new report, the next 007 will be both, as British actress Lashana Lynch will be taking over the codename from Craig's James Bond, following the character's retirement in James Bond 25

Described as a "popcorn-dropping moment," Lashana Lynch will be introduced by M to Bond in Bond 25 as the new 007. To be clear, Lynch is not Jane Bond, and Bond is still Bond - he's just no longer going to be Agent 007. Clearly attracted to his replacement, Bond himself will reportedly be up to his old tricks when he meets Lynch's character by trying to seduce her with his trademark charm. According to the source, however, Bond is "baffled when they don't work on a brilliant, young black woman who basically rolls her eyes at him and has no interest in jumping into his bed." Perhaps James has finally met his match after all these years.

Although born in London, Lynch is an actress of Jamaican descent. She made her movie debut in 2011's Fast Girls, later appearing as Maria Rambeau with Brie Larson in Captain Marvel. Earlier this year, it was reported she had joined the cast of Bond 25, although her status as the new 007 is a new revelation. Additionally, Lynch has had plenty of television work as well. She is perhaps best known for starring in the ABC period-drama Still Star-Crossed as Rosaline Capulet and as Arjana Pike in the British drama series Bulletproof. Lynch is also set to star in the post-apocalyptic series Y which is due to air on FX in 2020.

Directed by Cary Fukunaga, Bond 25 is set to be released on April 3, 2020 in the UK and April 8, 2020 in the US. Fukunaga also co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Z. Burns and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, altering a previous draft by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. The movie brings back Daniel Craig as James Bond, the former agent 007 who has since retired from active service. The 007 is then forced out of retirement to face perhaps his biggest challenge yet when investigating the abduction of a scientist. In addition to Craig and Lynch, the cast also features Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Rory Kinnear, Ben Whishaw, and Jeffrey Wright. Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) also stars as the movie's villain.

Times change and people evolve, and after 25 movies, the time might be right for a new agent to assume the moniker of 007. Depending on if this information is accurate and how Bond 25 turns out, we could be seeing the start of a new series of 007 movies, completely void of James Bond.
