Legendary actor James Caan has died. On the Misery and The Godfather star's official Twitter account, a message from his family was posted to announce Caan's passing. A cause of death wasn't revealed, but it was noted that Caan died on Wednesday. He was 82 years old.

"It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6," the statement reads. "The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time."

Caan, a well-respected actor who was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1978, can be recognized for any number of roles as a Golden Globe, Emmy, and Oscar nominee. He is very well known for his role as Sonny Corleon in The Godfather, a performance which earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination; he briefly reprised the role in The Godfather Part II. The original Godfather movie returned to theaters earlier this year in celebration of its 50th anniversary, bringing renewed attention to Caan's acclaimed work in the film.

Another career-defining role for James Caan was co-starring with Kathy Bates in Misery, the Stephen King adaptation released in 1990. Some of his other most memorable roles include parts in Brian's Song, Cinderella Liberty, The Gambler, Rollerball, A Bridge Too Far, Comes a Horseman, Thief, Gardens of Stone, Dick Tracy, Bottle Rocket, The Yards, Dogville, and Elf. His small screen work includes a main role in Las Vegas along with appearances in shows like NewsRadio, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Magic City, Hawaii Five-0, and Back in the Game.

The prolific actor had been keeping busy up to the very end. Last year, he appeared in Michael Lembeck's romcom Queen Bees, marking the final movie to be released during his lifetime. The film also stars Ellen Burstyn, Ann-Margret, Christopher Lloyd, and Jane Curtin. He has recently lined up another movie role as well. In March, it was reported that Caan had been cast alongside Morena Baccarin and Pierce Brosnan for Phillip Noyce's action thriller Fast Charlie; it's unclear if he'd shot any footage before his death. He had also been cast for a big role in Francis Ford Coppola's next movie Megalopolis, which would have reunited him with his Godfather director, but filming is set for this fall, meaning the actor won't be involved.

Caan had been married four times during his life, most recently to Linda Stokes from 1995 to 2017. He had five children, including actor Scott Caan, as well as daughter Tara and sons Alexander, James, and Jacob. Our condolences go out to Caan's family at this difficult time. May he rest in peace as his memory lives on.
