Since James Gunn brought a second iteration of The Suicide Squad to the DCEU, there has been one burning question that fans have been asking James Gunn over and over, and now the director has finally answered. That question is how Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn fits into Gunn’s future DC plans, and it looks like for Quinn fans, the news is good.

Margot Robbie has played Harley Quinn three times in the DCEU, having made her impactful debut in David Ayer’s original Suicide Squad, and reprised the role in her own movie, Birds of Prey. Like Birds of Prey, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad allowed Harley to be her R-rated best, and that had fans wanting to know if and when she would be returning again. Despite the recent upheaval at Warner Bros. Discovery when it comes to their DCEU slate of movies, Jame Gunn has given fans a definite answer about the anti-heroine’s future in the franchise.

Gunn was asked by one of his Twitter followers if Harley Quinn would be returning to the DCEU. Not one to skirt around an answer, Gunn replied with a definite affirmative, meaning that Margot Robbie fans can start getting excited and speculate on how Harley Quinn will return.

Gunn will have pleased many fans with his answer, but that doesn’t say when Harley Quinn will return or in what capacity. However, given Gunn’s previous comments, it is likely that her return will be a starring role rather that cameo or side role in another character’s vehicle.

Since The Suicide Squad, James Gunn has been teasing a number of projects that he would love to work on and top of the list seems to be a Harley Quinn series or movie with Margot Robbie. While he currently has his hands full working on the finalization of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 for Marvel Studios, and then writing the second season of Peacemaker, it seems that Gunn is in the DCEU for the long term.

Of course, Harley Quinn is already coming back to the big screen in the form of Lady Gaga who stars alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie a Deux, the sequel to the 2019 hit. As it stands, that movie is currently the last DC film on Warner Bros. Discovery slate, with a release date in 2024, which will likely mean that it will be a few years before James Gunn and Margot Robbie will be able to bring any other project to fruition.

While Joker still stands as the top DC villain, Harley Quinn is certainly up there in the popularity stakes, mainly due to her unpredictable nature and bright, flashy and loud on-screen iterations. While there are plenty of character’s who face an uncertain future under Warner Bros. Discovery new plans, Harley Quinn will not be one who needs to look over her shoulder, as her place in the DC universe seems to be one of the safest.
