Fans of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad should prepare themselves for more TV projects, but shouldn’t hold out much hope of seeing a new movie anytime soon. While 2016’ Suicide Squad was not a completely terrible movie, 2021’s soft reboot was much better received and gave James Gunn a foothold on the DCEU. Usually, that would mean a sequel would be instantly green-lit, but Gunn isn’t currently interested in doing another movie as he has found a new love of TV shows instead.

Following The Suicide Squads release, Gunn then delivered Peacemaker, a series centering on John Cena’s Christopher Smith, which continued the very adult-orientated sensibility of Suicide Squad on the small screen. Now it looks like this is where Gunn is going to stay for now as he wants to spend at least a year developing new DC content for HBO Max and that seems to include an Amanda Waller spin-off series and a handful of other shows that Gunn will be part of. He told The Playlist:

“Yeah, we’ve talked about it [a sequel to The Suicide Squad] … but the honest truth is, I just have so many hours in a day to work on stuff. And I had such a fun time working in television that I really think that’s what I’m going to spend the next year of my life doing.”

This obviously is not what those hoping for another big screen outing for The Suicide Squad want to hear, but in another way, the fact that Peacemaker season 2 has been green-lit and there are at least two or three other possible spin-off shows in the works means there is still a lot to come from The Suicide Squad on HBO Max.

While James Gunn is currently working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 for Marvel, when he returns to Warner Bros. to continue his DC work, it looks like he is planning on sticking around there for some time. Previously, Gunn discussed what he would like to do with the DC universe, and one thing that came up was a desire to do something with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn – something everyone needs more of in their lives. While being asked if he would consider directing a Harley Quinn movie, Gunn simply said, “I definitely would, yes.”

Harley Quinn is not the only character that James Gunn has teased potentially being a part of his future with DC and Warner Bros. Over the last few months the director has constantly been sharing cryptic details about the projects he has coming up on the horizon, and it looks like even without a new Suicide Squad movie coming anytime in the foreseeable future, there is going to be no shortage of R-rated antics coming to HBO Max in the next few years.

Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will come to Disney+ in December, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 following in May 2023. Currently, James Gunn’s next DC projects don’t have release dates.
