While the wonders of CGI continue to play a prominent role in the cinematic landscape, with new technology like the Volume allowing filmmakers to actually create worlds for actors to act in rather than relying on green and blue screen replacement, the advocating of practical effects when it comes to costumes and characters is still strong in the industry. With movies like Ghostbusters: Afterlife and the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion both strongly involving old school practical effects to bring their respective creatures to life, James Gunn has been sharing news about just how far Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 3 is going down that line and how it has led to the movie creating a new world record in the process.

While a lot of the Marvel world relies on cleverly composed computer-generated graphics to create its alien worlds, monstrous creatures and superheroes, that does not mean that it has abandoned the use of makeup effects and prosthetics to make the MCU seem like a place inhabited by real characters who actors can interact with on set to ensure that audiences can believe the stories being played out on-screen.

In a new Twitter post, James Gunn has revealed that GotG Vol 3 has claimed a World Record for having the “most makeup appliances created for a single production.” While characters like Groot and Rocket are created using CGI, other characters like Drax, Mantis and Gamora all go through lengthy makeup routines before shooting, and this clearly applies to many other characters appearing in the MCU’s last outing for the current Guardians team.

While there is little known yet about the plot of the Guardian’s third solo outing, we know it will finally introduce Adam Warlock into the MCU after he was teased way back in one of the post-credit scenes of Guardians 2, and the story will be emotional for many of the team including Gamora, who is now a different Gamora to the one who died in Avengers: Infinity War and who has a whole character arc to begin again.

Of course, before any of that, we will be seeing the Guardians of the Galaxy again in the summer’s release of Thor: Love and Thunder, and then in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special this Christmas, which James Gunn has previously hyped up. Speaking recently about the Holiday Special, Gunn said:

“The Holiday Special is the greatest thing I’ve ever done in my life. It’s totally ridiculous, and every day we can’t believe that we’re making it. We all completely love it. It is unlike anything that anyone’s ever seen before. I can’t wait for people to see it. And it’s out pretty soon. You know, it’s out this Christmas. It’s not like people have to wait that long.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will make its debut in cinemas in May 2023 as one of the final movies of Phase 4 of the MCU.
