It seems no time at all since James Gunn announced that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 was ready to star shooting, and just like that the movie is already heading into the final weeks of filming. While updating fans on his Twitter account about the latest addition to his ever-increasing collection of Rick & Morty figures that have been turning up as part of an ongoing prank, Gunn revealed that there are now 13 days of filming left on his final round of Guardians action.

With the film having been set up as the final installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy in their current form, there are a lot of Marvel fans eagerly awaiting the movie, which is slated to arrive in theaters next May. Having started out with the first Guardians movie in 2014, this really is the end of an era for all concerned, and it looks like the final movie in the series is going to be a big emotional send-off for several of the characters.

Following the issues caused by Covid over the last two years, the idea of a movie being able to wrap in less than two months will take a bit of getting used to. Many shoots, including some previous Marvel movies, have seemed to drag on endlessly thanks to shut-downs, delays in cast members being available, and postponements due to positive Covid tests. It really does feel more like business as usual as the pandemic disappears over the horizon for Hollywood.

Guardians of the Galaxy’s Future is Unclear But Marvel Will Already Have a Plan

The third Guardians of the Galaxy movie will see the arrival of Adam Warlock, a character who was originally teased in the post credit scene of Guardians of the Galaxy 2. While there is nothing yet known about the plot of the film, and there is a lot to come before we see the film hit cinemas next summer, there is no doubt that Marvel Studios are already working on where the characters who do continue on will appear next.

There has already been mention of a Nova series coming to Disney+ sometime in the near future, and this could link into the next appearance of the Guardians collective. While there is currently a lot of talk about the multiverse expansion that is a big feature of movies like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the Nova project would likely expand the cosmic side of the MCU that has been seen emerging in Eternals and the Captain Marvel movies, as well as the previous Guardians outings.

While it currently seems unlikely that James Gunn will be back for a fourth Guardians movie, there is a very well-used phrase of never say never that could well apply. With a huge number of projects already coming to the MCU story in the next few years, it is going to be a while before we do see the return of the Guardians, and in that time, who knows what could happen to bring James Gunn back into the Marvel fold for another interstellar adventure.
