James McAvoy (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) has joined the cast of Atonement as Robbie Turner, a man accused of rape by a 16-year old.

The movie is an adaptation of Ian McEwan's novel, of the same name. James will star opposite Keira Knightley in the Working Title production. The Hollywood Reporter says Atonement is a love story between Knightley and McAvoy's characters, but also covers the struggles of class, war and emotional truth.

Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice) is set to direct Atonement which is due to begin production in May this year; a 2007 release is scheduled.
