Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom director James Wan has confirmed that the upcoming sequel is officially finished filming. Last month, Jason Momoa had shared a video from the set announcing that they were wrapping up their work on the movie. Perhaps there were still some pickup shots or reshoots left to film, as Wan has just unveiled the final image from the set declaring that the film is officially wrapped.

"And finally, finally, finally picture wrap on the actual last day of Aquaman 2 in Malibu with these two gents," Wan said on Instagram, including a photo of himself with Momoa and Patrick Wilson having some fun on the set. "Yes, we do get very wet, a lot, on this show."

"A THOUSAND THANK YOUs to all the incredible crew who worked so hard and tirelessly on this picture," the director adds. "Especially the UK portion where we shot 95% of the film. Truly some of the finest artisans and craftspeople I’ve had the good fortune to work with. And big shout-outs to the amazing Hawaiian and Los Angeles units. I have a very long way to go before it will be ready, but I can’t wait to share this little film with you all."

Will the Sequel Match the Success of the Original Aquaman?

The sequel is on the way after the immense success of the first Aquaman. Released in 2018, the film topped $1.14 billion at the box office, making it the highest-grossing DCEU movie and putting it among the highest-grossing films of all time. It was a no-brainer for Warner Bros. to quickly put the sequel into development. Star Dolph Lundgren teased that this new film is better than the first one.

"That whole picture is just a class act," the actor told The Hollywood Reporter in November. "Everybody from James Wan and Jason Momoa to Amber Heard and the producers. I think this one is better. I think the script is stronger and it’s more exciting. The technology has moved forward in four years, so I was really pleased to be a part of it. James Wan is just going to blow everybody away again by this tremendous world that he creates. He’s involved in every little detail, even every little piece of every weapon, and I think it’s going to be great.”

James Wan directs Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick collaborated with Jason Momoa on the story, with Johnson-McGoldrick penning the script. The film stars Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Orm Marius, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as David Kane aka Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, and Vincent Regan as Atlan.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on Dec. 16, 2022. It will be available for streaming on HBO Max 45 days after its theatrical premiere.
