Video game adaptations tend to be tricky to navigate when translating the source material to the big screen for larger audiences. However, adaptations like HBO’s The Last of Us are ushering in a renaissance within a genre that has been plagued with poorly done cinematic renditions over the years. According to a Variety exclusive, horror industry mainstays Blumhouse’s Jason Blum and Atomic Monster’s James Wan are next in line to try their hand at breaking the video game adaptation curse. In their upcoming collaboration with Behaviour Interactive, the duo is developing a feature adaptation of the popularized horror game, Dead by Daylight.

The multiplayer, survival horror game comes from Canada’s largest gaming studio developer, Behaviour Interactive. Since 2016, Dead by Daylight has amassed commercial success, reaching over 50 million players since its inception. Gameplay consists of a one-versus-four format, where one player assumes the role as the Killer, and the remaining four work together as Survivors. As the Survivors evade the Killer and work to power up the exit gate by repairing five generators, the Killer is out to capture the four as sacrifices to a malevolent presence known as the Entity.

Executive Vice President at Behaviour Interactive Stephen Mulrooney expressed excitement for the nascent partnership with horror industry icons, Wan and Blum.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to work with Jason Blum and James Wan, two giants of the horror film industry, to further expand the ‘Dead by Daylight’ universe. At Behaviour, our motto is to create unique moments, together, forever. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are the ideal partners to craft ‘Dead by Daylight’s’ killer entrance onto the big screen.”

Wan echoed Mulrooney’s sentiments, mentioning how the game’s universe already provides excellent source material for a spine-chilling horror feature.

“In ‘Dead by Daylight’ the Behaviour team has created a love letter to the world of horror, building an incredible environment teeming with atmosphere and terrifying villains — perfect for a scary cinematic adaptation. We’re big fans of the game at Atomic Monster, and are thrilled to be teaming up with Blumhouse to bring this frighteningly visceral world to the big screen.”

Additionally, Blum relayed his dedication to bring forth an exceptional adaptation for the game’s diehard fans.

“We know there are so many fans of ‘Dead by Daylight’ out there and think it’s imperative we find someone who appreciates and loves the world as much as we do, to help us bring the game to the big screen. We know our partners at Behaviour and Atomic Monster will help us bring the best version of this game to life.”

Dead By Daylight is still in its early stages with the companies currently on the hunt for a director and a screenwriter for the project. Wan, Blum, and Stephen Mulrooney are confirmed producers for the film. EPs include Behaviour Interactive’s Remi Racine, Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Judson Scott, Blumhouse’s Ryan Turek, and Striker Entertainment’s Russell Binder.

Although the project is still at the beginning of its development, there are endless possibilities for the direction James Wan, Jason Blum, and Behaviour Interactive could take the feature adaptation of Dead by Daylight. The game has an extensive universe with no shortage of original, murderous beings to terrorize the Survivors. The Nurse, The Wraith, and The Hag are just the tip of the iceberg of cold-blooded entities that could make their way into the film. In addition to their original killers, Dead by Daylight also features classic villains licensed from movies and television including Halloween, Hellraiser, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Attack on Titan, and more.

Given how terrifying these paranormal serial killers can be, Wan and Blum are the perfect team to help translate the game’s grisliness to the big screen. Wan is the mastermind behind several successful horror franchises including, Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring — which is the highest-grossing horror franchise to date. Though Wan co-created the Insidious franchise with longtime collaborator Leigh Whannell, Blum has been involved since its creation as a producer. More recently, the duo’s latest venture M3GAN became a viral horror sensation upon its release. On his own, Blumhouse has been responsible for several hit horror features, including Get Out, the Paranormal Activity franchise, and The Purge franchise to name a few. Their combined track record and past collaborative history give way to an adept partnership capable of taking on the mammoth task of Dead by Daylight’s cinematic adaptation.
