Jared Leto has teased an exciting future for his antihero Marvel character, Morbius, with the actor hinting at not only his involvement in the wide-reaching multiverse but also his potential membership of the iconic supervillain team, The Sinister Six. Leto discussed his role in Morbius during Brazil CCXP 2021, dropping several hints regarding the official opening on the multiverse, and even mentioning upcoming MCU sequel Spider-Man: No Way Home:

“In the film version of Morbius that we’re bringing to you now, he’s also a part of a much larger universe. If you’ve seen the last Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, you know the Multiverse has officially opened, and there’s all kinds of opportunities for villains to meet up, thrive, and maybe even nurture their more sinister intents. That’s all I’m gonna say for right now.”

Leto’s use of the word “sinister” is likely no accident, with Sony having wanted to spawn a Sinister Six movie for some time. The studio attempted to set up the project off the back of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise in one of the most obvious spinoff teases of all time. While this was ultimately scrapped, the success of both Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Tom Hardy’s Venom have evidently given new hope to The Sinister Six eventually making it to the big screen, with Jared Leto’s Morbius now being brought into the fray.

Morbius will introduce one of Marvel's most compelling and conflicted characters, as Jared Leto is transformed into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease.

This is not the first time that Leto has hinted at the connectivity of Morbius, teasing the ways in which the movie will continue to expand the Sony Spider-Verse-slash-Venom-Verse. "In the film, I play a new Marvel character that attempts to cure his lifelong blood design with experimental science," Leto explained last year. "In the process, I turn into a living vampire. That's a little bit about what's going on, and I think it's going to be a fun one and I can't wait for you guys to see it. It's an exciting role in an expanding universe, there's a lot for us to look forward to."

This connectivity has also been confirmed thanks to the inclusion of Michael Keaton as Spider-Man: Homecoming villain, Adrian Toomes AKA The Vulture. While the actor himself has since revealed that he has no idea how any of this multiversal madness works, Vulture’s role in proceedings could be quite substantial, with Keaton reportedly returning to set to film additional footage.

The Morbius trailers have also name dropped Venom, with Morbius director Daniel Espinosa having accidentally let slip that Tom Hardy’s name was on the schedule. “It usually feels strange before the day begins, when you look at the schedule and stand on the set yourself,” the filmmaker said. “When you walk around there, the recording looks just like a Swedish production, but then when you look at the schedule and read names like Michael Keaton, Jared Leto, Tom Hardy, then it feels cool and very exciting."

Morbius is scheduled to be released in the United States on January 28, 2022. This comes to us from Brazil CCXP 2021.
