Jason Clarke is in early talks to star as John Connor in Paramount and Annapurna Pictures' highly-anticipated Terminator: Genesis, joining Arnold Schwarzenegger in the cast.

The news comes just one week after our report that Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke is the front runner to play Sarah Connor, with Brie Larson still in the running as well.

This raises an interesting question about the potential story line, with the 44-year-old Jason Clarke playing the son and the 26-year-old Emilia Clarke and 24-year-old Brie Larson in contention to play his mother. Is John going back in time to save Sarah? Or will we see flashbacks? While no story details have been confirmed, the plot reportedly involves time travel into the future.

The production is also seeking an actor to play Kyle Reese, the father of John Connor who was played by Michael Biehn in The Terminator.

Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) is directing from a screenplay by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier. It isn't known when production will begin, but Paramount has already handed out a July 1, 2015 release date.

Jason Clarke most recently starred in The Great Gatsby and White House Down. He will next be seen in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Child 44.
