Some characters from films become more iconic than the film themselves: Jay and Silent Bob are a perfect example. These are two characters not easily forgotten. Created by Kevin Smith, who portrays Silent Bob, these characters managed to make such a great impression on audiences that almost everyone knows who they are.

First debuting in Clerks in 1994, they were not main characters, they were side characters that were entertaining enough to receive many of their own spin-offs, most of which have gained status as cult classics. Here are all the Jay & Silent Bob films ranked from worst to best.

7 Dogma

The premise of Dogma is a little far-fetched, but that’s to be expected from Kevin Smith. Revolving around two angels, kicked out of Heaven, these angels plan to use the Catholic church to get back into Heaven, proving God wrong in his decision and bringing about the end of all things. Dogma is a satirical take on Catholicism, some religious sources called the movie "blasphemous" while other critics consider it brilliant enough to be quotable. Dogma sits on the fence for many fans. Some feel it is a bit of a departure from the classic theme of films like Clerks and Mallrats while others enjoy the uniqueness of the film. Dogma is one of those movies that you need to watch to really decide how you feel about it.

6 Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie

Jay & Silent Bob’s Groovy Cartoon Movie turns the comic of “Bluntman & Chronic” into a reality as Jay & Silent Bob are gifted with powers and become “Bluntman & Chronic” after winning $10,000,000. It follows the two as they navigate their newfound powers and manage “The League of Shitters”, a group of villains formed against them. This is only a bit better than Dogma as the fact that the movie is animated allows the creators more freedom to do a lot of things that aren't possible with live-action. That said, the premise of the film is similar to that of the others and Jay & Silent Bob's Groovy Cartoon Movie lacks the iconic face-to-face cameos that the Jay & Silent Bob movies have become known for.

5 Chasing Amy

Chasing Amy revolves around the writer of “Bluntman & Chronic” Holden McNeil who falls in love with gay woman Alyssa Jones, whose actress Joey Lauren Adams returns in Jay & Silent Bob The Reboot. As Holden struggles with the reality of his doomed love for a lesbian woman, Jay & Silent Bob make an appearance to assist him in handling his struggles. It also leads to Silent Bob sharing personal information in the longest speech he’s ever given to date about how he was in a similar position to Holden. Chasing Amy is more serious than other installments in the series of Jay & Silent Bob films, but it manages to handle serious topics in a comical manner and we are even blessed with a bit of backstory for our beloved boneheads.

4 Mallrats

Mallrats 2 Will Be Kevin Smith's Next Movie

Mallrats makes the list as Jay and Silent Bob make a rather memorable appearance in the lives of T.S and Brodie who laze around at the mall trying to get over their recent breakups. While Mallrats is more like Clerks in the sense that Jay & Silent Bob serve as secondary characters, it is still a performance worth watching. Jay & Silent Bob bring their chemistry to the table and add to the main characters’ own drama, chiming in with oddly helpful advice. Mallrats is a wonderful film as a standalone or watched in tandem with the other Jay & Silent Bob movies. Since 1995, most of the cast of Mallrats is not as well-known as golden idols like Carrie Fisher, it's possible to find "where are they now?".

3 Jay and Silent Bob Reboot

Jay & Silent Bob Reboot is the most recent installment in their series of Jay & Silent Bob films. It is a continuation of their antics with the “Bluntman & Chronic” rights, accidentally signing off their rights to the movie, rather than deal with the situation, they are determined to put a stop to production, no matter the consequences. Like many of its predecessors, the movie features a range of cameos including Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. This is higher on the list as it's a classic for Jay & Silent Bob, it's the same characters in a newer setting and with Jay's wise-cracking chatter-mouth and Silent Bob's... silence, it's a perfect combination that's only getting better with age.

2 Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back has grown in its status and has as much of a cult following as its predecessor Clerks. Jay & Silent Bob are going about their business and they discover that the comic “Bluntman and Chronic”, shockingly bears their likenesses, is being made into a film. Convinced that they have been made into characters and deserve a piece of the action, they go on a quest to stop it from being produced. With some stellar cameos from stars like Carrie Fisher who gave Kevin Smith advice he will never forget. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back really showcases the comedic potential of the characters.

1 Clerks & Clerks II

The best of the best is the original film Clerks where Jay and Silent Bob make their debut as two loser drug dealers hanging outside a convenience store. While we only get a taste of the characters in this classic, it was enough for the fans to demand more of the lovable losers. These two don't do much in the film, but they do somehow manage to speak some words of wisdom to the main protagonist Dante who navigates his way through his day with oodles of drama, including Dante's ex-girlfriend returning to town, the death of an old classmate and not to mention the fact that he's "not even supposed to be here today". Jay & Silent Bob appear again in Clerks II and are expected to make another appearance in Clerks III which just began production this year.
