Jeffrey Dean Morgan takes the role of the Comedian in Zack Snyder's upcoming Watchmen. Movies Online got the chance to ask Morgan some questions about his role in Watchmen while at a press conference for P.S. I Love You.
Watchmen, based on the award winning graphic novel by Alan Moore, is set in an alternate 1985 America where costumed heroes are a part of the world's history, and the "Doomsday Clock", which measures the tension between the USA and the U.S.S.R. is constantly at five minutes to midnight. Rorschach, a vigilante who refused to retire when his teammates did, is drawn out by the murder of one of his colleagues, and pulled into a world-wide conspiracy with terrifying implications for the future of mankind.
The Comedian, Morgan's character, is one of the darker and more controversial characters from Moore's graphic novel. Asked to describe his character, Morgan said:
But you don't hate him you know, so my job is to be able to do these f*cking horrible things, yet have the audience not hate his guts. You read the book you don't hate the Comeidan, there is a reason he does what he does. He just takes it to a level most people wouldn't but for him its normal. The work I am doing on Watchmen is mind bending and physically just hard.
Many superhero films have taken license with the costumes of the characters - from the armored Bat-suit of Batman Begins to the leather outfits of X-Men. Morgan tells us that Watchmen remains faithful to the source material. "Michael Wilkinson the costumer who designed the costume stayed very true to the comic book, maybe a little bit updated. The Comedian is spot on to the book, spot on... His costumes are exactly like it is in the graphic novel."
Morgan also has a great deal of praise for director Zack Snyder:
I don't think I have worked with anyone more prepared. He has a copy of the graphic novel in his hand all the time. It never comes out of his hand. He's constantly referring to it and will setup a shot looking at the graphic novel.
Watchmen stars Patrick Wilson, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jackie Earle Haley, Malin Akerman, Matthew Goode, Stephen McHattie, Carla Gugino and Matt Frewer. Watchmen opens across America on March 6th, 2009.
