Landing a role in Friends would be a dream come true for many actors during the show's incredibly successful run on television, but the timing just wasn't right for Jennifer Grey. Back in the very first season of the popular comedy show, Grey appeared in the guest role of Mindy, a close friend of Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston). The casting came as Grey was still riding high off of the success of the film Dirty Dancing, at which point she was trying to reinvent herself by doing something different.

But Friends just wasn't a good fit for Grey at that time in her life. In a new interview with MediaVillage, Grey reflects on what went wrong with the show. She recalls taking part because she was a big fan, but the challenges that come with taking on a guest role included frequent changes to the plans for her character. That wound up giving Grey heavy anxiety, and she hadn't yet learned how to effectively navigate that just yet, ending up with no desire to revisit that experience when the time came to reprise the role. As Grey recalls:

"I was a fan of the show, and I got the call to do it. Then when I did it, I had such bad anxiety because they kept changing the script. It's very hard to be a guest star because you're not a part of it, and you're really trying to figure it all out. They were trying to figure out what the character was, what the scene was and it was changing and changing and changing. It all made me so anxious that I could barely do it."

Jana Marie Hupp Took Over the Role of Mindy

Friends

The Mindy character, with Grey in the role, is revealed in the show's first season to have gone on a honeymoon with Barry, the man Rachel had left at the altar. The character later appeared in season 2 when she marries Barry with Rachel serving as maid of honor. When Mindy returned, it was Jana Marie Hupp in the role, as Grey turned the part down, as she says in her new interview.

"When they asked me to come back, I said I couldn't. They got someone else to play the role."

It wasn't a happily ever after ending for Mindy and Barry. A season 6 episode has Rachel revealing through dialogue that the couple had gotten divorced after Mindy caught Barry cheating on her. That goes back full circle to when it was revealed that Barry had cheated on Rachel with Mindy to begin with. Mindy did not physically appear in that episode.
