The new sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2 could end up being the swansong for veteran actor Jim Carrey. Having entertained audiences with his very memorable roles for decades, Carrey can be recognized for any number of films, with many of his comedies in particular widely regarded as some of the genre's all-time best. The actor, who reprises his acclaimed role as the villain Dr. Robotnik in the new Sonic movie, is one of today's most accomplished and successful Hollywood stars.

For his part, Carrey feels he's accomplished and earned more than enough with his career for him to be happy with walking away from it at this point in his life. He has found great joy in his other creative endeavors, which includes quiet time painting in the comfort of his own home, and this has gotten him to strongly consider his retirement from Hollywood. At the very least, he'll be taking some time away. Here's what the actor told Access Hollywood, per Deadline.

“Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious. It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break... I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

Carrey has slowed down with his big-screen roles in recent years, though he is still quite a prolific actor. Before appearing in 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog, he hadn't starred in a significant role since 2014's Dumb and Dumber To, a follow-up to the beloved 90s film Dumb and Dumber. In 2016, he appeared in the indie films The Bad Batch and Dark Crimes. From 2018-20, Carrey also spent two seasons starring in the Showtime series Kidding and had a run playing Joe Biden on several episodes of Saturday Night Live in 2020. More recently, the actor reprised his role from The Cable Guy for Verizon's Super Bowl commercial in February and participated in a Bob Saget tribute comedy show that will start streaming on Netflix in June.
