Last year, fans of Jim Carrey were excited by rumors that Ace Ventura 3 was being developed, and during this year’s Super Bowl, a new advert brought back his character from The Cable Guy. However, while plenty of old franchises are being revived right now, Carrey’s recent announcement that he is considering retiring put any returns to his biggest characters doubtful. Now, he has pretty much ruled out any return for him as Ace Ventura in the future, commenting that he has no old characters in mind that he wants to bring back.

Carrey is currently appearing for a second time as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic The Hedgehog 2. While it looks pretty likely that he will be back for another round as the crazed scientist in Sonic’s third outing, fans hoping for him to also be back on the big screen as characters like Ace Ventura will likely be disappointed as the actor feels that it has probably been too long to go back to them again.

"I don't have any in mind that I would like to," Carrey told ComicBook when asked about the possibility of returning to his most famous characters. "Most of the time when you make something that really hits with people, the sequels have a diminishing return. If you do it long enough after the fact, you're kind of imitating yourself now; you're not using your original inspiration. These [Sonic] movies were made close together, and they were like an evolution that was being planned in my own head, at least, from the get-go."

Jim Carrey Returns to TV in Showtime Comedy Series Kidding

While he may be known for being a joker, when Jim Carrey dropped the bombshell that he is “seriously considering” retiring from acting, many believed that the 60-year-old was simply having an April Fool’s laugh. However, it seems that there may not be a joke in this, as the actor has been making it clear in a number of interviews during the Sonic 2 tour that he has perhaps done all that he wants to in Hollywood and unless a really good script arrives in his hands.

Speaking to Access Hollywood, Carrey said:

“Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious. It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break... I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

From his early slapstick roles in Dumb & Dumber and Ace Ventura, through more serious roles like Amazon Prime Videos’ Dark Crimes, Jim Carrey has been a force in Hollywood for almost four decades, and in that time, it is fair to say he has had a very high hit rate compared to some of his peers. While he may not quite be done yet, it is clear that he is not just going to be appearing in any movies that are offered to him and will be very selective of what he does next.
