Veteran actor Jim Carrey might be nearing the end of his acting career, but he may not be completely finished just yet. Recently, Carrey revealed that he was strongly considering retirement, feeling that he's accomplished enough with his career to feel satisfied walking away. This means that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 could very well become Carrey's final feature film if the actor follows through with his intentions to retire.

Depending upon what happens with Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, however, we could see Carrey back in another movie if his villainous character comes back for the third installment of the trilogy. Per IGN, producer Neal Moritz addressed Carrey's situation while at the film's "blue event" to celebrate its premiere. Moritz made it clear that should Carrey hang it up after this film, Dr. Robotnik wouldn't appear in part 3, as they "wouldn't even try" to recast the character with another actor. Fellow producer Toby Ascher was quick to agree with that sentiment.

With that being said, the Sonic producers are pretty confident that Carrey would come back for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, even if he wouldn't consider another film. They seem to suggest that they'd love to have him back for more scenes in the Sonic franchise as such a valued member of the family. The producers also believe that the feeling is mutual, as Carrey has been having so much fun with the role that it's hard to see him turning down Sonic 3, as far as they can tell.

"Jim Carrey is always a member of the Sonic family and he will always have a place in these movies and TV shows as long as he'd like to be around," Ascher explained. "We love Jim and he's so special, and what he does with Robotnik is so incredible, we would love him as long as he would like to be there with us."

Moritz added, "I have a feeling that he loves Robotnik so much that I don't think he'll be able to walk away from that."

Jim Carrey Says He's Fairly Serious About Retirement

Robotnik

Jim Carrey recently said he plans to retire. While promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the actor told Access Hollywood that he's satisfied with his body of work and has found joy in other creative hobbies. He couldn't say with 100% certainty just yet that he's retired but that he's "fairly serious" about it. In any case, he noted that he's taking an acting break.

"Well, I'm retiring. Yeah, probably. I'm being fairly serious. It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink that says to me that it's going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I'm taking a break," Carrey said. "I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I've done enough. I am enough."

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 8, 2022. While a third movie has been reported on, as well as a Knuckles spinoff series for HBO Max, those projects do not yet have release dates.
