Walt Disney Pictures and Robert Zemeckis will make A Christmas Carol, starring Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge and the three ghosts that haunt him: the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Future. The rumor that circulated earlier this week has now been confirmed by both The Hollywood Reporter andVariety.

The film is an adaptation of the Charles Dickens tale that Zemeckis wrote and will direct.

Zemeckis will shoot the film using "performance capture/Disney digital 3-D" animation, a continuing evolution of techniques he introduced in The Polar Express and continues with Beowulf, the upcoming film that stars Angelina Jolie. A Christmas Carol will also feature a touch of live action and computer graphics.

Several Web sites have reported that Bob Hoskins -- who worked with Zemeckis on Who Framed Roger Rabbit -- might play Mr. Fezziwig in the film, but Disney said no official deal making has commenced with the actor.

A release date has not been set.
