During a recent writers' roundtable hosted by The Hollywood Reporter, Everything Everywhere All at Once director Daniel Kwan shared a story about a peculiar movie idea. Kwan shared with the group (that included Jordan Peele, Rian Johnson, Tony Kushner, Chinonye Chukwu, and Martin McDonagh) that Jim Carrey had once reached out to him and creative partner Daniel Scheinert with an idea for a found-footage horror movie that revolved around the filming of Dumb and Dumber To.

Kwan recalled:

"Very early in our careers, Jim Carrey reached out. He had just seen Paranormal Activity and was like, 'Guys, it’s found footage and it’s horror — have you seen it?' And we were like, 'Uh-huh, we’ve heard of it. Where is this going?' And he was like, 'I haven’t seen anyone do that — but with comedy. And I have this great idea.' Basically, the set of Dumb and Dumber was famously a haunted set — it was in the same hotel that The Shining was inspired by — and he’s like, 'The whole time we were shooting, things were breaking, people were getting hurt, doors were swinging, and it felt haunted. We’re going to shoot Dumb and Dumber To, and I want you guys to do a found-footage horror comedy on the set. While we’re filming, you guys are going to make a feature-length, behind-the-scenes video that slowly becomes a horror film.'"

Carrey starred in all three films in the Farrelly Brother's Dumb and Dumber franchise as Lloyd Christmas. In the first installment, the Stanley hotel, located in Colorado, was used as the location for scenes in the film's Danbury Hotel. The hotel is known for its mysterious allure that inspired Stephen King to pen The Shining.

Kwan went on to share that he and Scheinert wanted to move forward with Carrey's idea:

"We’re like, 'OK, we’re in. This is amazing.' We wrote a whole outline and were really excited. Then we sat down with the producer, we pitched the idea, and they’re like, 'We’re not actually going to make this. I’m sorry, Jim got really excited, but there’s no way the studio is going to let us do a movie while they’re shooting Dumb and Dumber To.' And we were like, 'OK …'"

Kwan and Scheinert have worked together on multiple projects including the films Swiss Army Man and Everything Everywhere All at Once, and television series, including Children's Hospital and Awkwafina is Nora From Queens.

New Line Cinema

Dumb and Dumber To, starring Carrey and Jeff Daniels, premiered in 2014 and followed the original 1994 film and its 2003 sequel. Carrey, Daniels, and the remaining cast did not return to the Stanley Hotel to film any part of the franchise's third installment.

Carrey first gained recognition for his comedic performances on In Living Color in the early 1990s. He starred in three comedies in 1994: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber, propelling him to stardom. Carrey continued to be a prominent figure in the comedy genre, starring in films like Liar Liar, Me, Myself & Irene, Bruce Almighty, Yes Man, and Kick-Ass 2, among others.

Carrey surprised audiences with his work on dramatic films, earning Golden Globe Awards for his work on 1998's The Truman Show and 1999's Man on the Moon. In 2004, he starred in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, opposite Kate Winslet. His portrayal of Joel Barish in the romantic drama received critical praise and earned him another Golden Globe Award.

Carrey last appeared on Sonic the Hedgehog 2 this year, reprising the role of Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik from the original film. In April, Carrey said that he was taking a break from acting and that he would only return if presented with a script for something that would be important for people to see.
